Elliott, Okoorian repeat as Ches-Mont champions
Two years ago Sun Valley had three wrestlers make it out of the first weekend of post-season action. Last year, that number grew to four. This time around the Vanguards have five wrestlers headed to the District One Class AAA Central championships next week at Wissahickon.
And that includes a pair of back-to-back Ches-Mont League champions.
Seniors Alex Elliott and Steve Okoorian both won their second straight league titles to highlight Sun Valley’s effort at the Ches-Mont League championships Saturday at Bayard Rustin High School.
Elliott won the 160-pound crown and picked up win No. 100 along the way. He won the 138-pound crown last year. Okoorian also went 3-0 to claim the 170-pound crown after winning the 152-pound title a year ago. The three wins boosted his career total to 108, according to Sun Valley coach Tom Ellis. The Vanguards finished seventh in the team competition.
Elliott and Okoorian could have some company in the 100-win club. Sean Donahue is up to 99 career victories after his third-place finish at 132. Teammate Christian Batemen was third at 138 and Nick Garvey took seventh. All three advance. Avery Frank was eighth at 152, but there is a possibility that he could move on because of injuries to other wrestlers, Ellis said.
Meanwhile, in the Catholic League, Cardinal O’Hara’s Mike Lewis was the only Delco champion. He went 3-0 to win the 145-pound championship. He advances to the District 12 Class AAA championships next week at Edison High School.
Also moving on are Nick and Jake Poulos, and Nick Senderling of Archbishop Carroll. The Poulos brothers were second at 120 and 170 pounds, respectively. Senderling was fourth at 113.
