Shump will be inducted into state track Hall of Fame
Karen Shump earned many titles during her stellar two-sport career at Penncrest High School. The three-time Daily Timesfemale Athlete of the Year is about to receive another designation: Hall of Famer.
It was announced Monday that Shump will be inducted into the Pennsylvania High School Track and Field Hall of Fame. The ceremony will take place Sunday, March 1 during the indoor state track & field championship at Penn State.
This is the second Hall of Fame honor for Shump. It was recently announced that she will be inducted into the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame.
Shump was a four-time gold medal winner in the shot put at the PIAA Class AAA outdoor track and field championships (2005-08), and a three-time winner at the indoor state meet. She finished second in 2006. Shump also was a three-time medal winner in the discus, claiming gold in 2008.
Shump won the shot put at the Nike Indoor Nationals in 2008 and finished second in the event twice at the Penn Relays. She played third in the shot at the Nike Outdoor Nationals in 2007 and was sixth in the USATF junior meet in 2007 and 2008.
She earned second-team All-America honors from Track & Field News in 2007 and 2008.
