Burke’s loss is still enough for Chichester
Chichester did not need a win from Shayne Burke to beat Interboro in a key Del Val League wrestling showdown Friday night. The Eagles just needed their 170-pounder to stay off his back and the senior delivered.
Burke dropped a three-point decision to Tahj Sanders, but that was enough for the Eagles to hold on for a 34-32 victory over the host Bucs to keep Chi’s league championship hopes alive.
Fellow senior Joe Trefz scored an 8-3 decision over Joe Forte to give the Eagles a 34-29 lead. He was one of three wrestlers who came off the injured list to help Chi. Although they lost, Jeremy Gannon (106) and Manny Mitchell (145) hung tough to keep the match close, according to Chi coach Jim Beletti.
“Those guys came up big for us.’ Beletti said.
Dan Sullivan (182), Isaiah Bobo (220) and Craig Baldwin (120) came up with big wins for Chi (13-2 overall, 2-0 Del Val).
Consecutive wins from Mike Wasch (132), Eric Thomas (138), Jess Finley (145) and Jason Miksit (152) helped the Bucs cut the deficit to 31-29 before Trefz gave the Eagles some breathing room.
