Smarkola twins help Chichester enjoy Classic day
Chichester’s Chris and Tommy Smarkola dominated the wrestling tournament competition at the Chichester Classic Saturday and it wasn’t even close.
The Eagles capped a perfect day on the mats with a 40-37 triumph over Danville Area.
In that match, Chris Smarkola logged a pin in 48 seconds in the 126-pound match, giving the Eagles the championship. The Smarkola twins both finished 5-0 on the day.
Chichester also notched victories over Franklin Towne Charter (58-15), Phoenixville (60-12), Olney (72-12) and Cardinal O’Hara (77-0).
The Smarkola boys both improved their season records to 19-5.
Other standout performers for Chi included Craig Baldwin (120), Dan Sullivan (285) and Tom Barlow (152), each of whom went 5-0. Ed Sykes (152) and Noah Harvey (138) put forth strong 4-1 efforts.
At the Garden Spot H.S. tournament:
Upper Darby posted an impressive 4-1 record for third place, with wins over South College (44-36), Dallastown (41-28), North Penn (35-30) and Wilson-West Lawn (54-25).
Sam DePhillipo dominated the 126-pound weight class, going 5-0 for the day. Colin Cronin (138), Jake Mejas (113) and Peter Augustin (285) all went 4-1.
At the Springfield (Montco) Spartan Clash: Penn Wood’s Abraham Charles and Dan Allen went home with gold medal after going undefeated in their respective weight classes. Charles (5-0) was champion of the 138-pound division and Allen (4-0) bested the competition at 170.
In a Central League meet late Friday:
Conestoga 35, Strath Haven 27: Mike Dougherty (160), Tommy Zeigler (113) and Noah Frantz (120) each scored a win by way of pinfall for the Panthers. Justin Fremont picked up a well-earned, 1-0 decision over Michael Karas in the heavyweight bout, while Zach Newlon notched a 2-0 decision in the 170-pound match.
