Governor Mifflin takes second in Berks Catholic Tournament
The Governor Mifflin High School girls basketball team opened the season by finishing second in the Berks Catholic Tournament Dec. 5 and 6. Meanwhile, the Mustang boys split their first two games of the season.
The Governor Mifflin girls opened the season with game against Susquehanna Township in the first round of the Berks Catholic Tip-Off Tournament. The Lady Mustangs outscored their opponents in all four quarters and won the game, 62-41.
Governor Mifflin jumped out to a 16-10 lead after one quarter, the expanded the lead to 14 by halftime, 35-21. The Lady Mustangs continued to pull away in the second half, securing the first win of the season.
Madison Koehler led the Mifflin offense with 12 points in the game. Kylie Herman and Emonie Reviere each had 11 points, while Melissa Martin scored nine points and Jennifer Martin had eight.
The victory sent the Mustangs to the championship game where they took on host Berks Catholic. The Saints used a strong second quarter to help them top a 62-49 victory over the Mustangs.
With the scored tied at 13-13 after one quarter, Berks Catholic outscored the Mustangs in the second quarter, 14-7. The Saints outscored Mifflin in the third quarter, 18-16, and the fourth, 17-13.
Koehler was the high scorer for Mifflin with 20 points in the contest. Reviere and Herman each had seven points and Martin had five.
