Season ends as Council Rock South ousted from states in OT by Archbishop Ryan
PHILA. — The hope was that Council Rock South could regroup in the brief intermission between regulation and overtime. Really, the way District 12 and Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL) champion Archbishop Ryan finished the second half of its PIAA opener with the Golden Hawks, somehow, you just knew it wasn’t going to end well for the Rock.
It took the Ragdolls just 46 seconds to poke home the game-winner in OT Tuesday night at the South Philadelphia Supersite. Junior Julianne Blank intercepted an attempted clearing pass by the Hawks at the 20 and drilled it into the left-hand side of the net for the golden goal.
After tying the game at 1-all on a goal by freshman Taylor Madison, Ryan had been knocking on the door. The Ragdolls ended regulation with a flurry of shots on the CR South net after spending most of the previous 25 minutes in the Hawks’ half of the field.
A season that began with so much promise — South kicked off with five straight wins including victories over District 1 qualifiers Downingtown West, Conestoga and William Tennent — was over in an instant.
The state playoff with Ryan also began with high hopes as the Hawks spent the first 50 minutes of the contest banging shot after shot at Ragdolls keeper Jazmine Gonzalez. The school record-holder of shutouts with 55, Gonzalez stopped all but Elissa Dotzman’s free kick from the 18 in the 17th minute.
The senior captain for the Hawks took the ball to the top shelf where it went off the fingertips of Gonzalez before glancing off the cross bar and into the back of the net.
South missed a number of opportunities to pad its slim edge both throughout the remainder of the first half and in the opening minutes of the second.
