Episcopal shut down in loss to Malvern Prep
Episcopal Academy’s offense couldn’t get much going Saturday night, dropping a 21-7 decision to Malvern Prep.
The loss, a second straight for the Churchmen, sets their record at 5-5, including just 1-3 in the Inter-Ac, heading into next week’s grudge match with Haverford School.
It’s the second straight loss in which the Churchmen have managed just seven points, following on the heels of last week’s 41-7 rout at the hands of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.
Saturday’s touchdown came on a 7-yard run from Ryan Whayland late in the first quarter. The extra point by Connor Ringwalt tied the game at 7.
But that was about all from the offense, and while the defense did a good job containing the possession passing attack of Malvern quarterback Alex Hornibook, the Churchmen couldn’t slow them down completely. The EA defensive effort was led by linebackers Jake Martelucci and Austin Morgan and defensive back Jon’Avin Freeman.
Hornibrook opened the scoring with a four-yard touchdown connection with Trevor Morris. Hornibrook found Zach Fernandez for a 27-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to put the Friars (5-5, 3-1) ahead for good.
Fernandez added a 13-yard score in the third quarter to set the final margin.
