GIRLS TENNIS: OJR’s Lee into PIAA-AAA semifinals; Codreanu upset
Owen J. Roberts sophomore Meredith Lee decided that one day at the PIAA Class AAA girls tennis tournament wasn’t enough.
Lee topped Penn Manor’s Katina Jones in straight sets (6-1, 6-0) before edging District 6 champion Yvonne Peters-Washington in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the PIAA-AAA semifinals tomorrow at 9 a.m. at the Hershey Racquet Club.
Lee stands alone in remaining locals after District 1 champion Mihaela Codreanu of Methacton was upset in the first round. Codreanu, last year’s state runner-up, fell in the first round to North Allegheny’s Anna Li, 7-5, 7-6 (5). Li then defeated Exeter’s Ali Snyder in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a match with Upper St. Clair’s Charlotte Madson.
Lee will face Shady Side Academy’s Ananya Dua, who defeated District 3 No. 3 seed Sammi Snyder, 6-1, 6-2, before topping District 12 champion Julianna Herman, 6-3, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.
The semifinal winners meet in the final which is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
