Carter more than a passing fancy for Haverford School
SPRINGFIELD — Sometimes overlooked as one of the key cogs to The Haverford School’s success in 2014, quarterback Kevin Carter has had a productive junior season, albeit somewhat quietly.
Since a three-interception season debut against West Catholic, Carter has dutifully handled the responsibilities of the Fords’ No. 1 signal caller. Because he is surrounded with tremendous athletes and playmakers, Carter has never felt the pressure of carrying the full weight of the team on his shoulders.
Last Saturday, though, was Carter’s day to shine. He passed for a school-record 391 yards in a 35-0 rout of Germantown Academy. His single-game performance ranks seventh all-time in Delaware County history. It’s the most passing yardage by a Delco quarterback since 2012, when Colin Wright amassed 402 yards for Ridley in a District One Class AAAA playoff loss to Spring-Ford.
The Independent Schools coaches had no trouble selecting Carter as weekly MVP at Monday’s Delaware County Coaches Association meeting at Moe’s Grill in Springfield.
In the Del Val League, Interboro’s Sean Menold earned player of the week accolades after guiding the Bucs to a pivotal 35-8 victory over Glen Mills. Menold, who holds the distinction of owning the most MVP wins of 2014, was an almost-perfect 9-for-10 passing with 192 yards and a touchdown. Menold also ran for a score and excelled on defense in the secondary. Menold led the way and kept the Bucs ‘˜ District One playoff aspirations alive in a must-game game.
Speaking of do-or-die situations Garnet Valley found itself in one against Haverford High. Quarterback Steve Flanagan engineered a fourth-quarter comeback as the Jaguars claimed a thrilling, 44-41 win and kept their District One Class AAAA playoff hopes alive. Flanagan rushed for four touchdowns and delivered the biggest throw of the Jags season in the final minute, connecting with tight end Tom Cleary for the game-winning score. For his efforts, Flanagan was the sure-fire top choice for Central League MVP.
