Tosto, Methven get stingy for O’Hara
Liz Tosto and Kelley Methven paced a strong defensive effort as Cardinal O’Hara tuned up for Wednesday’s Catholic League showdown against Archbishop Carroll with a 2-1 nonleague triumph over Strath Haven Monday night.
If the Lions win Wednesday, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the Catholic League between O’Hara, Carroll and Bonner-Prendergast. A coin flip will be used to break the deadlock. If Carroll wins, the Patriots finish first, the Pandas second and the Lions third.
Makayla Gallen and Jess Randazzo scored one goal each to pace the O’Hara offense, but it was the defense that led the way. Strath Haven wasn’t able to break through until Val Henderson found the back fo the cage with 5:46 left in the game. Goalie Maureen Heneghan stopped 10 shots for the Lions (13-3, 7-1 PCL). Caroline Boyd made nine saves in goal for Strath Haven.
Bonner-Prendergast 4, Mount St. Joseph 3: Alyssa Monaghan, Riley Dolan and Sierra Stretch teamed up for the winner in overtime.
Monaghan, who also scored a goal, drove the ball into the circle and fired a pass toward the cage. Dolan directed it to Stretch, who put it home six minutes into the extra period. It was her third goal of the game.
Mary Anne Young also had an assist for the Pandas (12-3, 7-1), while goalie Maggie Baldini made four saves.
Interboro 3, Penncrest 2: Annette Helmandollar scored twice including the winner in overtime as the Bucs erased a 2-0 halftime deficit.
Ellie Sims and Maitlin Combs scored to give the Lions that 2-0 lead at the break, but it wasn’t enough. Helmandollar converted a pass from Hailey Hicks to get Interboro on the board. Lexi Tansey tied the game and Helmandollar scored again, 3:15 into the extra session, to win it.
Steph McCool, Alexis Kinkerton and Haley Hicks stood out on defense for Interboro. Maddy Plotts made 13 saves in goal for the Lions.
In the Del Val League
Chichester 5, Academy Park 0: Meghan Wimmer poured in three goals to pace the Eagles. Amanda Focht and Alex Rybak also scored for Chi, while goalie Nicole O’Donnell made six saves.
In the Ches-Mont League
Downingtown West 6, Sun Valley 0: Nikki Freeman scored four times to pace the visiting Whippets. Staci Curry made 11 saves in goal for the Vanguards.
