Upper Dublin girls complete unbeaten regular season

UPPER MORELAND — Only Upper Merion and Upper Moreland stood in the way of an undefeated regular season for the Upper Dublin girls cross country team as the squads took to the difficult Upper Moreland course Wednesday.

Upper Dublin was able to complete its undefeated season going 9-0 in non-league contests with a 7-0 Suburban One League American Conference record.

“I told the girls that this is the last meet standing between them and an undefeated regular season,’ Upper Dublin coach Tony Giammarco said. “For the seniors this is the last time that they’re running a dual meet. They want to set themselves up for going into conference championship meet with no points being carried.’

All season long the Cardinals have relied on the talent of its top five runners. Lucile Ionescu won the race Wednesday afternoon with a time of 19:54. Sarah Smith, Sophie Gustafson, Marissa Holl and Emily Stewart finished second through fifth respectively as the top five Cardinals once again carried the Upper Dublin squad.

“[Health] has not been a problem, knock on wood,’ Giammarco said of the health concerns of his top runners. “I think today it’s glaringly apparent we have not found a sixth or a seventh that can really contribute, which is a shame.’

Right after the top five Upper Dublin runners, Upper Moreland’s Maria Antoni (21:26) claimed sixth place as she and fellow Golden Bear Missy Leonardi, who took 17th place represented the only Upper Moreland runners in the field.
