Power reaches district quarterfinals
Rylee Power is a win away from qualifying for the PIAA Class AAA singles tournament.
The senior from Marple Newtown won her first two matches in the District One Class AAA singles tournament Thursday to earn a spot in the quarterfinals. The top four players automatically early a trip to Hershey for the PIAA championships. Oct. 31.
Power, the ninth seed, knocked off Shannon Nixon of Cheltenham, 6-4, 6-3, in the first round and then defeated eighth-seeded Alyssa Skulsky of Council Rock North, 6-4, 6-3, to advance to Friday’s quarters against top-seeded Mihaela Codreanu of Methacton.
No other details of the tournament were available.
In the Del Val League:
Academy Park 5, Chichester 0: Lattana Sithara, Vicky Outland and Breanna Reid swept the singles in straight sets as the Knights completed their first undefeated run through the Del Val League in program history.
Amy Pham and Jenny Vu, and Jasmine Hightower and Shani Lee took the doubles in straight sets to complete the sweep for Academy Park (10-3 overall, 9-0 Del Val).
Chester 5, Penn Wood 0: Lasheeda Jones, Jamie McDowell and Aya Salim swept the singles to help the Clippers (5-4) nail down second place in the Del Val League.
In the Inter-Ac League:
Episcopal Academy 6, Notre Dame 1: Genevieve McCormick set the pace for the Churchwomen with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at first singles. Meredith Hughes scored a 5-7, 6-4, 10-5 triumph at second singles for Notre Dame.
In the Tri-County League:
Barrack Hebrew 4, Delaware Valley 1: Talia Raiken 10-4 pro set victory at first singles led the way for the Cougars. All five matches were played in pro sets.
