Gregory’s goal wins it for Haverford School
It was only fitting that a game between two of the top ranked boys soccer teams in Southeastern Pennsylvania went right down to the wire.
Connor Gregory’s goal in the 52nd minute as The Haverford School, the No. 1 ranked team in the Daily Times Super 7, held on for a 2-1 nonleague victory over Conestoga Thursday.
Jerry Karalis opened the scoring for the Fords, who extended their winning streak to five games. The Haverford School (7-1) is ranked fifth in the latest Southeastern Pennsylvania Coaches Association poll, while the Pioneers are eighth.
Matt Mayer and Alex Haas picked up assists, while goalie Quinn Letter made three saves.
In other nonleague action:
Strath Haven 1, Council Rock North 0: After several near misses, Ahmir Gordon, Will Hotham and Andrew Restrepo finally teamed up for the winner 10 minutes into the second half.
Hotham took a throw in from Restrepo and flicked a pass to Gordon, who flicked a shot over the head of CRN keeper Billy Storm to give the Panthers (7-5-1) the only goal they would need.
“They came close on the same play several other times,’ Strath Haven coach Ryan O’Neill said.
Goalie Matt Eiel (eight saves) and the Strath Haven defense took care of the rest.
Abington 1, Penncrest 0: The Lions had two good scoring opportunities in the second half, but could not convert. Thomas Rounds made 11 saves in goal for Penncrest (10-3).
