Blast by Shelby Samuels ignites Conwell-Egan rout of Archbishop Carroll

Until today, Conwell-Egan Catholic (CEC) found wins tough to come by. Until today, the Lady Eagles had only one — against non-league Calvary Christian Academy.

Until today, Conwell-Egan was winless in the Philadelphia Catholic League (PCL).In four previous attempts, the Eagles came up empty against PCL opponents.

Until today.

Today, Conwell-Egan won and won big — to the tune of a 7-0 triumph over PCL rival Archbishop Carroll.

“I think we came together today and it was a much-needed win for us,’ said Eagles coach Bill Dailey.

“Hopefully, this will be the turning point for the second half of the season.’

Egan received a pair of goals each from senior Kerry Lowery and Katherine Strenge and lone goals by Shelby Samuels, Bailey Brown and Mackenzie Michaels. Defensively, the Eagles got three saves in the first half from senior goalkeeper Jessica Salvati and three more after the break from junior Maggie Irvine.

“We’ve been in a slump lately and we needed a good ‘ W,” said Brown, after the game. “Once we got one (goal), we got a little momentum and things kind of took off after that.’

Lowery made sure of it. With Egan on top, 1-0, the senior put two balls in the back of the net, pushing the score to 2-0 on a cross from freshman Mackensie Michaels then poking home a rebound of a shot by Brown for a 3-0 edge.
