Hua, Vanson give Marple Newtown the edge
Rachel Hua and Caroline Vanson held off Melin Zhao and Sarah Muche, 7-5, 6-4, at first doubles to clinch the Marple Newtown tennis team’s 4-3 victory over Upper Darby in a Central League match Thursday.
The Royals (3-8, 1-7) claimed the other doubles matches, including Grace Grant and Nikki Kaur’s 6-2, 6-4 triumph at No. 2.
Lower Merion 4, Garnet Valley 3: Stella Chen rallied for a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory at third singles for the Jaguars, who came up on the short end of a pair of three-set battles, including Catherine Cai and Alina Liang’s 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-5), 2-6 heartbreaker at second doubles.
In the Del Val League:
Academy Park 5, Penn Wood 0: Lattana Sithara, Vicky Outland and Breanna Reid combined to drop just two games in sweeping the singles competition for the defending champion Knights (7-3, 6-0), who recorded their second consecutive shutout and moved within a win of another title.
In the Bicentennial League:
Delco Christian 4, Plumstead Christian 0: Ellie Schmucker, Mei Li and Ciara Muller cruised through singles competition for the host Knights.
In the Catholic League:
Lansdale Catholic 3, Archbishop Carroll 2: Jackie Finnegan improved to 4-0 in league play with a 6-1, 6-0 win at third singles and Tess Ginn rolled by the same score at first singles for the Patriots (2-4, 2-2).
In a nonleague clash:
Perkiomen School 4, Barrack 1: Rebecca Dubvosky and Zoe Klein salvaged a point for the visitors with a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 victory at second doubles.
