Exeter duo wins District 3 doubles title
It was bad news, good news as far as the Exeter Township High School boys’ tennis team last week.
The bad news was that the Eagles lost the Berks League’s championship match to Wyomissing, 3-1 on May 8. The good news was that two days later, the doubles team of Nolan Perugini and Jonah Buczewski won the District 3 Class AAA title at the Hershey Racquet Club. The duo won in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. The victory came over the Hempfield High School pair of brothers, Nathan and Josh Carl.
Next for the Exeter pair will be the opening round of the state tournament. They begin their state trek on Friday, May 23, when they take on the District 1 third place finishers.
For the Exeter team, the loss to Wyomissing was disappointing, but the Spartans have been a powerhouse in the league, winning their 10th consecutive league title.
The Eagles’ lone victor in the title match Jonah Buczewski in singles play, defeating Rodrigo Saad, 7-5, 6-1.
The Eagles got to the title match by defeating Wilson in the semifinals on April 28, 3-0.
Winning in singles competition were: Buczewski, 6-0, 6-1; and Todd Weiner, 6-0, 6-0. Also winning for Exeter was the doubles team of Logan Gettis and Jeff Perduch, 6-3, 7-5.
