Methacton clinches PAC-10 team title with 7-0 win over Pope John Paul II
The Methacton boys tennis team returned to the top of the Pioneer Athletic Conference Monday, defeating Pope John Paul II, 7-0, to clinch the regular season team championship.
Methacton finished the league season 8-0 after edging defending champion Spring-Ford last Thursday 4-3 with a sweep of doubles.
Junior Justin Baman was Methacton’s most dominant performer at No. 1 singles, downing PJP’s Brian Caresosa, 6-0, 6-0. Max Schneider was a straight-set winner over Connor McCarthy at No. 2 singles (6-4, 6-1) and Tassos Sapalidis came through at No. 3 singles to defeat San Ki Kwon, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to sweep singles for the Warriors.
The Methacton doubles teams all won in straight sets over their PJP opponents: Ryan Hamilton and Nick Simeone at No. 1, Debanik Purkayastha and Subanik Purkayastha at No. 2, Kelly Donahue and Kevin Wichert at No. 3 and AJ Benno and Hari Sanathanam at No. 4.
It is Methacton’s first team title since winning three straight from 2009-2011.
Phoenixville 6, Owen J. Roberts 1: Phoenixville won at No. 2 and 3 singles and swept doubles on the way to the PAC-10 win.
Bobby Newman and Nick Vaile were straight-set winners at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. At No. 1 singles, Owen J. Roberts’ Utkarsh Pandey downed Luke Lombardi, 6-2, 7-5.Pennsbury 5, Spring-Ford 2: Pennsbury swept singles en route to the non-league victory.
The Rams’ winners were Nick Griswold and Matt Yerkes at No. 1 doubles and Tyler McEvoy and Eash Aggrawal at No. 4 doubles.
