Brandywine’s Schmeck and Gimbor eliminated in regional tournament
For Brandywine Heights wrestlers Dan Schmeck and Hunter Gimbor, their postseason trek is over. Both competed at the Class AA Southeast Regional Tournament at Wilson High School last weekend and both were eliminated before they could qualify for this weekend’s state finals.
The Brandywine duo were the lone Bullet survivors from the District 3-AA Tournament one week earlier, and both were hoping at least to finish in the top five in this weekend’s regional tournament which would qualify them for the state tourney.
But Schmeck went 2-2 in the 138 pound weight class and Gimbor dropped two of his three bouts at the 120 pounds class.
Gimbor started off on the right foot, pinning Dominick Bilardo of Valley Forge in 2:58 of their first round bout. But he then went up against Joey Gould of Bethlehem Catholic in the quarterfinals. Gould sent Gimbor to the consolation bracket with a 3-0 win.
There, Gimbor suffered a 2-1 loss to Daniel Diaz of Pine Grove. Gimbor completed his season with an season record of 31-10.
For Schmeck, he too started out with a win. He pinned Josh Wattenmaker of Lower Moreland in 2:58 of their first round match-up. But in the quarterfinals, Schmeck lost a 5-0 decision to Mike Labriola of Bethlehem Catholic.
Schmeck rebounded with a 6-5 decision over Camp Hill’s Alex Gallaher in his first wrestle back match, but then ended his season when he lost a 4-1 decision to Angel Canela of Wyomissing.
Schmeck finished the season with a record of 29-7.
