Upper Darby’s Witmer sisters help carry Royals past OJR
Sisters Lexie and Sam Witmer provided the offensive spark for Upper Darby as the Royals moved on in the District 1-AAAA softball playoffs with a 3-1 victory over Owen J. Roberts Wednesday afternoon.
Lexie Witmer went 4-for-4 with one run scored while Sam went 2-for-3 with one run scored as the Royals tied the game at 1 in the third before scoring two runs in the fifth to secure the win.
Carli Benozich added two hits in the victory. Rebecca Sorentino got the win in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing six hits and one run (zero earned) with one strikeout.
OJR got a three hit performance from Brianna Smith. Alissa Vining struck out four in the loss.
“We weren’t as sharp as we needed to be today,” OJR head coach Jen Beaver said. “They (Upper Darby) are a talented team and we couldn’t afford to make mistakes like we did.
“I’m proud of how far this team has come this season. This was a young group who really played well together and fought for each other. Today was not the outcome we hoped for, but those girls have a lot to be proud of.”
Upper Darby will face Souderton — 10-0 winners over Springfield-Delco — in the district quarterfinals Friday.
