Anna Camden becomes Shipley’s all-time leading girls’ basketball scorer
Bryn Mawr >> Shipley senior Anna Camden entered Tuesday afternoon’s Friends’ Schools League contest against Friends Select needing four points to surpass 2014 graduate Tamesha “Sox” Alexander as the school’s all-time girls’ basketball leading scorer.
After starting the game with a three-pointer, Camden received a pass from Sanaa Redmond and converted a layup less than two minutes into the contest to eclipse the old record of 1,371 points achieved by Alexander.
“It was super meaningful to eclipse the record at home,” said Camden, who finished with 13 points to set a new career mark of 1,381 points (and counting) as of Wednesday morning. “To do it in front of the home crowd, my brother – who does not get to see play that often, my parents and teammates and faculty who were there when I scored my 1,000th career point last year was special.”
“It meant a lot to see Anna get this achievement,” said Redmond following the contest, a 63-38 Shipley win. “It means so much to see someone of that caliber who has continued to grow and encourage me and the rest of the team. She has worked really hard and definitely deserves this moment.”
Shipley girls’ basketball head coach Sean Costello added, “This moment is great. Anna spends hours and hours in the gym and to see her achieve this record is rewarding. She is a great person who represents Shipley in a positive manner. Sox paved the way and Anna is a great example of that. It has been awesome.”
Camden, a Penn State recruit who has plans of majoring in broadcast journalism with plans of becoming a sideline reporter, is now turning her focus to a successful finish to her high school career.
During the past four years, Camden and the four other seniors have helped lead Shipley to a pair of Pennsylvania Independent Schools Athletic Association girls basketball titles, while continuing to hone her skills.
“I was just talking to the four other seniors the other day about the amazing time we have shared over the past years,” said Camden. “Shipley has shaped me into the player that I am. Whether it’s Coach Sean or my teammates it was very special to achieve them by my side and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
Camden moves into second place on the all-time Shipley basketball scoring list (boys and girls), trailing only Sam Sessoms (2,091 points). Alexander is third (1,371), Erin Venafra (1,290) is fourth and Ky Howard (1,261) is fifth.
