Bulldogs looking to keep building in ‘17
It might not have been reflected in its 2-8 record, but the Morrrisville High School football team did make progress last year.
In the eight losses, the Dawgies were competitive in five of those games, including four they lost by eight points or less. The key was a much improved defense and now Morrisville will attempt to make the more difficult step of actually winning some of those games.
“We have a few returning starters who were all-league, so we expect to be more competitive than in past years,” said coach Derrick Savage. “We really felt like we took strides forward last year and believe we will be more consistent this year.”
Morrisville’s biggest problem is replacing five three-year starters and an All-Bicentennial Athletic League selections.
Among the positions where Morrisville is set is at quarterback with returnee Felix Feliciano. He will hand the ball off to the likes of seniors Isaiah McDavison and Amir Pack along with junior Maleek Crooks.
“We feel good about the quarterback position and like our skill position players,” said Savage.
Three starters have returned on the offensive line. They are sophomore Brian Strother as well as seniors Brian Hines and Luis Colon.
Morrisville has some proven strengths on defense as well. Pack and junior James Williams are outside linebackers who received all-league honors a year ago.
The defensive backfield may be the team’s best unit of all. Senior Isaiah McDavison was all-league last year and junior Jaquese Little tied for the team lead in interceptions.
Look for the Morrisville defense to keep the team in most of its games. If it can replace its graduated wide receivers and establish a consistent running game, the team has a shot at nearing the .500 mark.
