Reporter/Times Herald Softball Roundup: North Penn’s Volpe homers, strikes out 15 in win over Pennridge

North Penn 9, Pennridge 3 >> North Penn broke a 1-1 tie by scoring five runs in the top of the third inning on two home runs – Mady Volpe connecting on a three-run blast while Brie Wilmot belting a two-run shot – as the Knights topped host Pennridge Friday for a SOL Colonial Division win.

Volpe struck out 15 batters in a complete-game victory, allowing three earned runs on six hits. The Coastal Carolina commit also had an RBI double in the fourth and went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and a run scored.

Gianna Cimino was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Sophia Collins was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for North Penn (3-0, 2-0 division). Annabelle Smink finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Rachel Lowry was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Julia Shearer had a double and scored twice.

Pennridge leadoff hitter Catelyn Thrush was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored while Madison Sibler went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Cassandra Schillo hit a two-run home run in the sixth for the Rams (1-2, 0-2).

Hatboro-Horsham 9, Plymouth Whitemarsh 5 >> Kendal Leitner registered 13 strikeouts in a complete-game effort and also went 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored as Hatboro-Horsham opened its season with a home SOL Liberty Division victory.

Hannah Suh’s two-RBI double in the top of the fourth pulled Plymouth Whitemarsh within 4-2 but the Hatters (1-0, 1-0) answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning.  Alyssa Tooley hit an RBI single than scored to make it 6-2 when Marissa Rapino reached on an error. Tess Kearney’s RBI double and a Kayla Tauber RBI single pushed HH’s advantage to 8-2.

Tauber was 2-for-4 with two RBIs while Rapino finished 2-for-4 and scored twice. Tooley collected a pair of RBIs and Kearney had two runs scored.

Talia Carr scored twice while Lauryn Kane led off the fourth with a triple for the Colonials (1-3, 0-2), who lost their second straight.

Quakertown 11, Upper Dublin 1 (6 innings) >> Syd Andrew struck out 14 while at the plate went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI as Quakertown rolled to a six-inning SOL Liberty victory over visiting Upper Dublin.

Ava Beal was 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored for the Panthers (4-1, 2-0 division), who won their third straight. Skyler Williams hit a home run and a double and finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

Gretchen Wolpert gave the Cardinals (1-1, 1-1 division) their lone run with a solo home run in the third.

Central Bucks East 8, Souderton 1 >> Amelia Funston pulled Central Bucks East even 1-1 on her leadoff home run in the top of the third then gave the Patriots a 4-1 lead with a two-run homer in the fourth. The Patriots added four more runs in the seventh as they handed Souderton its first loss of the season.

East’s Mackenzie Wilson went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and pitcher Soleil Dooner struck out 11 in tossing a seven-hit, complete-game victory. Funston finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs while Elizabeth Gray was 3-for-4 with a run scored as the Patriots (4-1, 3-0 SOL Colonial) won their second straight.

Ryan Zimmerman was 2-3 with an RBI single in the first that gave Souderton (4-1, 1-1 SOL Colonial) a 1-0 lead. Riley York went 2-for-3 with a double for the Indians.
