Mercury roundup (Sept. 15): Methacton field hockey takes down Spring-Ford

FIELD HOCKEY

Methacton 5, Spring-Ford 1

Two first-half goals put Methacton on its way and four Warrior scorers led them to a takedown of Spring-Ford in PAC Liberty play Friday.

Carmela Maro and Maddy Baker scored in the opening quarters for Methacton, which quickly doubled its total in a 1:12 span late in the third quarter through goals by Lily DeWan and Ceci Rehak (two goals). Kyra Mauer and Elena Weychert supplied assists.

Marissa Cagliola, assisted by Nina Scott, scored the Rams’ lone goal in the third period.
Winning goalie Maddy McKenney made five saves. Spring-Ford’s Norah Kirsch recorded 13 saves.

Perkiomen Valley 1, Owen J. Roberts 0

Vic Guano was the difference-maker for the Vikings with an unassisted goal to take a PAC Liberty win at home over the Wildcats. The defensive showcase was championed by nine saves by Jaz Campbell for Owen J. Roberts and one save from Dru Landes for Perkiomen Valley. The Vikings outshot the Wildcats, 17-8 with four corners.

The Phantoms took down the Trojans in a PAC Frontier matchup Friday. Phoenixville goals were scored by Thomas Forshaw (2), Matheus Piza (2), Davi Samprano, Ryan O’Neill, Luis Chiroy (2), Calvin Albrecht, Cesar Castanon, Brody White, and Christian Diaz. Assists came from Piza (2), Christian Diaz, Castanon (2), Chiroy (3), Samprano, and Forshaw.

Upper Perkiomen 6, Pope John Paul II 3

Five first-have goals and six different goal-scorers paved the way for the Tribe in PAC Frontier action. Brae Jerrom, Brody Lash, Luke Gerstenberg (assist), Matthew Fisher (two assists), Logan Watkins (two assists) and Ethan Barr all found the back of the net. Theo Deskevich provided another assist for Upper Perk.

Spring-Ford 5, Methacton 1

After taking a 1-1 tie into halftime, the Rams pulled away with four goals in the second half. Cole Preshutti led the charge with two goals while Colin Rush, Max Exeter and Bill Collins all added a goal each for Spring-Ford. Ethan Kumar buried Methacton’s lone goal. Logan Hyduke had one save for the Rams while Wyatt Stemler (four saves) and Jason Lugo-Munoz (one save) rotated net duties for the Warriors.

Spring-Ford 5, Methacton 0

Meg Kurian and Lena Ackerman were triple threats for the Rams as each figured on three goals apiece in a shutout of the Warriors in PAC Liberty action Friday.
Kurian scored three goals while Ackerman supplied a goal and two assists for unbeaten Spring-Ford. Hannah Dennison rounded out the scoring while Ally Garvey (2) and Sarah Hang had helpers. Olivia Nield needed only three saves for the shutout.

Owen J. Roberts 3, Perkiomen Valley 0

The Wildcats made the most of their scoring chances and got goals from Sabrina Marks, McKenzie Hagerty and Emerson Storti in a PAC Liberty contest Friday afternoon. Marks, assisted by Storti, and Hagerty scored in the game’s first 21 minutes and OJR never looked back. Storti’s score with 15 minutes to play was assisted by Fiona Sanders. Abigail Smith stopped six shots for the clean sheet. PV keeper Olivia Hulayew had three saves.

Upper Perkiomen 2, Pope John Paul II 1 (OT)

Upper Perk needed overtime to edge Pope John Paul II in PAC Frontier action Friday. Upper Perk’s Sarah Fisher scored from outside the penalty area with less than a minute left in overtime (assisted by Sarah Straup) for the Upper Perk victory. The duo combined for Straup’s goal late in the first half. PJP forced extra time when Kira George set up Cam Schuler’s tying goal. PJP keeper Kyanni Escudero made 13 saves. Upper Perk’s back four of Elizabeth Proctor, Morgan Sweed, Maelyn Bolinsky, Elyse Kreiner and defensive midfielder Brooke Sullivan held off PJP’s attack and Ava Long made several crucial saves throughout the game (11 saves).

Phoenixville 6, Pottstown 1

Sophomore Taylor Schneider scored twice including the opening goal and the Phantoms cruised in a PAC Frontier match. Senior captain Ella Ballow, sophomore Aubrey Bruno, freshman Avary Carr and senior Julia Oliveira scored a goal each and Gabbie Goudie contributed 2 assists. Phantom goalies combined for seven saves (Emine Ulcay 2, Madelyn Zink 5).

Boyertown 10, Norristown 1

Marissa Hillegas and Autumn Levengood registered two goals and an assist each and Boyertown eased past Norristown in PAC Liberty play Friday. Other Bear scorers were Tessa Wolfe, Emily Walter, Lara Morell, Nicole Shimukonas, Lauren Wensel and Jordyn Diffenderfer. Maddie Baker chipped in two assists.

Methacton pulled out the four-set non-league win over Downingtown West Friday. Methacton (3-1 PAC, 4-1 overall) was led by Makayla Batten with 9 kills and 3 blocks, Kayla Ginther with 9 kills and 4 aces, and Jacque Rizzuto with 7 kills and 3 aces. The offense was set by Rachel Petting who had 38 assists and contributed 3 kills.
