Main Line girls’ soccer wrapup: Baldwin School improves to 5-0

The Baldwin School soccer team improved to 5-0 with a 3-0 victory Tuesday at George School, as sophomore forward Gia Vicari scored all three goals for the hat trick. Rachel White, Lauren Bracken and Olivia Dewitt assisted on the goals. Baldwin goalie Simi Bleznak made five saves for her fourth shutout in five games.
Baldwin soccer head coach Adrian Cox, noting the team’s recent success, said, “We have a young team, which is exciting for the future. We start five freshman, four juniors and two seniors.”
Three days earlier, Baldwin came back from a 1-0 halftime deficit to defeat host Westtown, 3-1. For the Polar Bears, goals were scored by Gia Vicari (Celia Page assist), Rachel White (Kahlaa Cannady assist) and Jen Dietrich (Rachel White assist).
On Sept. 9, Baldwin defeated Friends’ Central 1-0. Sophomore forward Gia Vicari beat two defenders and slotted home a shot to the corner from the left wing in the 50th minute to lead the Polar Bears to victory. The play was set up by sophomore defender Lauren Bracken who interecepted a pass from FCS and played a nice entry ball to Vicari who did the rest. Sophomore goalie Simi Bleznak had six saves for her third straight shutout.
Baldwin defeated Germantown Friends, 3-0, Sept. 7. For the Polar Bears, who improved to 3-0, sophomore forward Gia Vicari scored in the eighth minute off a through ball pass from sophomore midfielder Natalie Sgro. The second goal was scored by junior center midfielder Rachel White off a crossing pass from senior defender Kahlaa Cannady in the 57th minute. The third goal was scored by Vicari from the top of the 18 off a nice entry pass from White. Sophomore goalie Simi Bleznak recorded six saves for her third straight shutout.

In other Main Line high school girls’ soccer action:

Conestoga defeated Harriton, 2-0, Tuesday evening, improving its record to 4-0-1 overall and 2-0 in in the Central League. The first goal was scored in the first half via a penalty kick taken by Caitlyn Ellerbeck after Caitlin Donovan was tackled in the box on a breakaway opportunity. The second goal was rifled home by Ariel Loevy in the second half. Shots on goal totals were 12-5 in Stoga’s favor. Colleen Baldwin played the first half in goal for Stoga, and Maeve Regan came on in the second half to make three saves.
The Pioneers earned a 1-0 win against Council Rock South Monday. Conestoga’s goal was scored off of a corner kick in the first half by Nia Scott. Assist was by Emily Wertz who took the kick. The Pioneers had an 11-4 shots-on-goal advantage. Conestoga’s keepers split the game with Colleen Baldwin making two saves in the first half, and Maeve Regan recording one save in the second half.
Two days earlier, Conestoga tied Downingtown West 1-1 away at Downingtown. Conestoga scored at the 20th minute off of a perfect through-ball from Rachel Dirico which was slotted home on the break by Nia Scott. Stoga held the lead until the last 30 seconds when Downingtown scored on a corner kick to tie the game. Shots on goal were 20-13 in Downingtown’s favor. Colleen Baldwin played the full game in goal for Stoga, and recorded 17 saves, including a handful of what Conestoga head coach Ben Wilson called, “top class saves.”
Four days earlier, Conestoga defeated Springfield (Delco), 3-1. Conestoga’s scores in order were Ceara Sweeney, Caitlin Ellerbeck and Rachel Dirico. In goal for Conestoga, Colleen Baldwin had one save and one goal against in the first half. Maeve Regan had three saves and no goals against in the second.
Episcopal Academy lost to Garnet Valley, 2-1, Sept. 9. Molly O’Brien scored EA’s lone goal, and Episcopal goalies Morgan Messner and Hannah Moriarty combined for nine saves.
Friends’ Central lost to Baldwin School, 1-0, Sept. 9. Junior goalie Mira Kauffman-Rosengarten chipped in six huge saves along the way to keep the Phoenix in the game.
The following day, the Phoenix bounced back for a 2-0 win against Marple Newtown. After a tightly contested first 20 minutes, the Phoenix finally broke through in the 23rd minute. Winger Hayden Posencheg beat multiple defenders down the line and was able to serve a great cross, which was flicked on by Lorna MacFarlane before being buried on the far post by winger Hannah Posencheg. The Phoenix continued to press the rest of the half, before Hayden Posencheg found Lorna MacFarlane once again in the final minute. MacFarlane beat three Marple defenders en route to a collected finish to send the Phoenix into the half up 2-0.
The second half saw excellent defensive play from the Phoenix. Freshmen Lyla Forman and Sydney Bendesky each provided a good spark off the bench. Junior goalie Mira Kauffman-Rosengarten chipped in with four saves for the Phoenix to earn her first career shutout.
Friends’ Central battled to a 1-1 draw against Academy of Notre Dame Sept. 7. After carrying the play for most of the first half, the Phoenix (0-0-2) conceded a goal early in the second half on a big ball over the top. FCS responded quickly however, as sophomore Phebe Guenther found classmate Zoe Shoemaker streaking behind the defense for a finish over the NDA keeper.
Merion Mercy Academy tied Academy of Notre Dame, 2-2, Tuesday. Merion goals were scored by Michelle Giannini and Meredith Mackenzie
The Golden Bears defeated Upper Moreland, 1-0, Monday. Theresa Hegarty scored the game-winner.
Radnor defeated Ridley, 2-1, in two overtimes Tuesday. Maura Holst scored both Radnor goals, one of which was assisted by Sophie Breedveld. The Radnor goalie was Anna Gurian.
