Archbishop Carroll’s Karli Dougherty is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The senior lacrosse forward has played a key role in the Patriots reaching the PIAA state championship game twice, and in Carroll winning its 20th consecutive Catholic League title. A three-sport athlete (field hockey, basketball, lacrosse), she has helped the Patriots win a combined six Catholic League titles. As a sophomore, she was a starting member of the field hockey, basketball, and lacrosse teams who all won Catholic league titles that year. Over the years, she has received multiple All-Main Line, All-Catholic and All-Delco honors. A fine student (first honors every report card all four years at Carroll), she will be attending Drexel University next fall on a lacrosse scholarship, where she will major in Health Sciences.

Q: Tell us a little about your lacrosse training during this past COVID pandemic year, the biggest challenges you faced as a lacrosse player due to the COVID pandemic, and how you dealt with those challenges.

A: I would say the hardest part is the transition into the safety protocol because of the pandemic. Wearing a mask while playing and sacrificing your personal life to make sure the team would have a season is a big change for me and my teammates. Carroll lacrosse had no quarantines and didn’t lose any of our league games, allowing us to improve our skills each and every day.

Q: What aspect of lacrosse did you work on most during the past off-season?

A: For most of the off season, I mainly focused on my shooting, footwork, and especially strength, speed/agility.

Q: Tell us a little about your start in lacrosse. Who have been your biggest lacrosse mentors, and what was the most important thing each of them taught you about lacrosse?

A: I started playing lacrosse in 4th grade for Springfield AA and continued my playing into my grade school St. Francis of Assisi. I also played Phantastix for six years to improve my skills and was coached by great lacrosse mentors like Coach [Lorraine] Beers, who was my first coach when I arrived at Phantastix. She taught me that all of your goals in lacrosse are not given to you – that you have to work at it to obtain them mentally and physically. Coach Beers has always provided unbelievable opportunities to grow and improve in lacrosse but said it was up to me to take advantage of these opportunities and use them to further my game.

Q: You wear uniform jersey No. 21 for Archbishop Carroll lacrosse – was there a reason you chose this number?

A: 21 was my graduation year at Carroll and I believed that number gave me positivity.

Q: Tell us a little about your pre-game preparation the day of a game.

A: Hydration the day before and day of a game is highly important for me, especially since we are now transitioning into the summer weather. Music is a huge thing in preparation and my teammates would agree with that. Having the right music playing on game day gets the whole team hyped up and ready to play.
