Sudden victory for Souderton over rival Pennridge

FRANCONIA >> Souderton went the full 12 rounds, and a little bit more.

“We really fought hard,” Big Red’s Clark Trowbridge said, “and you could just really tell we were all working hard for each other.

“It’s a really good feeling when you have that mentality and come out with a win.”

Souderton’s “fight” was displayed in its ability to battle back from a 9-6, second-half deficit.

The Indians evened things up with rival Pennridge, then got the game-winning goal from Trowbridge with just 22 seconds left in the three-minute overtime. Big Red’s efforts carried into the evening hours and produced a satisfying 10-9 victory over the Rams.

“That was a tricky one,” Trowbridge said of her game winner. “We just really wanted to get the ball and stay controlled and run down the time. And then just ‘Hail Mary’ it, go at it and have no regrets.”

Trowbridge’s shot with the seconds winding down sent the Indians into a state of euphoria and raised their Suburban One League National Conference record to 5-4. Pennridge dropped to 3-5 in the National.

“Pennridge really played a full game,” Big Red coach Claudia LaMarca said, “so it really came down to the wire, whoever got that draw.”

Caroline Kelly, Reiley Knize and Lauren Hallman each scored twice in regulation for the Indians, and Isabel John, Ang Borisow and Avery Farina each added a tally.

Goalie Courtney Mallon came up with some key stops. The Indians got possession in overtime and never let it get out of their grasp.

“We kept our cool. We tried to remain calm and make the best opportunity count. Our decision making is definitely on the rise. It’s getting better with each game. So I think they did a really good job of executing what our game plan was for the end.”

Aubrey Maher and Maddie Edinger each racked up four goals for the Rams, with Grace Rosica adding one. Pennridge built a 9-6 lead before Souderton stormed back. The Rams are at North Penn Monday at 3:45 p.m.

“We hope to be able to continue this roll,” Trowbridge said. “Hopefully we can continue this roll that we’re on. We want to go into the Coatesville game (at home at 6:30) Friday night with this energy and this mentality that we have.”

Added LaMarca: “We’ve been focusing on our fight. Today was a reflection of doing it at every opportunity. We’re hoping that we can carry that momentum through the rest of our season.”
