Mercury Roundup (April 15): Phoenixville, Methacton put hammer down in second half for PAC wins
Girls lacrosse
Phoenixville 12, Upper Perkiomen 5 >> A 5-0 edge in second-half scoring enabled the Phantoms to put distance between them and the Indians on the way to victory in Thursday’s PAC Frontier Division game.
Gianna Thaxton had five goals for Phoenixville, with Jaime Michaud adding a hat trick and Natalie White two goals. Andrea Hook and Caroline Flick completed the scoring as Mary Kate Sitko and Bella Carpenter had two-goal outings for UP.
Methacton 15, Boyertown 6 >> Hat tricks by Jayme Weber, Julia McCann and Megan Sanelli helped the Warriors blow open a close PAC Liberty Division game with the Bears Thursday.
Methacton also got two-goal showings from Michelle Zhai and Kealy McCarthy, along with solo tallies from Rylie Derrickson and Alexa Kratz. Boyertown, which trailed by a narrow 6-5 count at the half, got two goals from Delaney Fox and Ali Pioli, and one apiece from Allie Schell, Jordan Woodring, MacKenzie Clark had 10 saves for the Warriors, Elli Ferraro 12 for the Bears.
Upper Merion 14, Pope John Paul II 4 >> Cat Merritt singlehandedly outscored the entire Golden Panther lineup in keying the Vikings’ PAC Frontier Division victory Thursday.
Merritt scored five goals while assisting on a sixth as UM opened a 9-2 halftime lead. Julianna Callison, Ashley Evitts and Olivia Smith completed the Vikes’ scoring with hat tricks while PJP’s offense featured two by Kallan Bustynowicz and one apiece from Rory Nelson and Annie Rathgeb.
Spring-Ford 22, Norristown 1 >> With 14 players getting into the scoring act, the Rams rolled over the Eagles in Thursday’s PAC Liberty Division contest.
Emma Sowers netted a hat trick and two assists to lead Spring-Ford’s balanced offense, which also got two-goal productions from Lexi Sowers, Alyssa Mozi (two assists), Mac Maloney, Madi Doyle, Maddie Pierce and Giana DiBattista. Abbey Boyer, Alyssia Collins, Summer Smith (three assists), Brenna Whiteside (two assists), Lindsay Evak, Brynn Frankhouser and Karly Cabot completed the SF point production.
Owen J. Roberts 11, Perkiomen Valley 1 >> Gabbi Koury’s four-goal showing headed the Wildcats’ offense Thursday as they rolled over the Vikings in PAC Liberty Division play.
OJR’s other multiple-goal scorers were Alexa Vogelman (three assists) and Gracyn Smith, who each had two. Blakely Doyle, Grace Kratz and Maggie Kilgallon rounded out the OJR scoring while Korrigan Sweeney added five-save goaltending.
Anna Dawson scored for PV, which got 18-save play in goal from Lauren Foley.
Boys lacrosse
Perkiomen Valley 12, Boyertown 1 >> The Vikings started strong, going up 4-0 after the first quarter and never looked based as they cruised to a commanding win over the Bears Thursday.
The offense was very balanced in this PAC Liberty Division pairing as nine PV players got on the points sheet led by senior captain Jack Scaliti and Matt Farrington’s three-goal, one-assist nights. The Vikings defense was menacing, only giving up a goal with 1:59 remaining in the 4th. Senior jacob Klosinski got the shutout before being given the night off with just four saves logged.
Adam Gallagher produced Boyertown’s lone goal.
Spring-Ford 9, Phoenixville 2 >> Jumping out to a sizeable lead Thursday, the Rams put a damper on the Phantoms’ Senior Night festivities by dealing their PAC hosts a loss.
Aaron Judge starred for S-F with four goals and an assist. He was complemented by Will Fish (2G), Nick Teets (1G, 1A), Justin Wixted (1G) and Christian Marchini (1G).
The Phoenixville defense, led by senior goalie Nolan Martin, kept the Phantoms in the game with 11 saves. Bryan Maguire was the scorer for the Phantoms, netting both goals.
Owen J Roberts 13, Pope John Paul II 5 >> John Devine was a six-goal sensation for OJR in a PAC win over PJP.
Dylan Mercadante added two goals and two assists and Gabriel Dellapenna also scored twice. Will Whitlock also scored.
Ambrose Collilouri netted a hat trick for PJP, whose other goals came from Luke Sykes (two assists, 10 ground balls) and Eric Zadroga. Connor Gucwa handled five ground balls and Sean Fallon had a seven-save game in goal.
Softball
Westtown School 6, Perkiomen School 2 >> The Panthers were unable to take advantage of Claudia Knowles’ strong pitching performance Thursday, falling to Westtown in a non-league matchup.
Knowles allowed three earned runs in five innings, striking out 12 batters along the way. Kaia Glacken threw a solid 6th inning in relief, striking out one, and not allowing a hit.
Kenna Tobin was once again responsible for the team’s only hit in the game, and she also scored one of the team’s runs. Lola Mejias scored the other run after reaching base on a walk.
Boys tennis
Phoenixville 7, Upper Merion 0 >> The Phantoms dropped only two games in the doubles bracket on their way to a sweep of the Vikings in Thursday’s PAC matchup.
The doubles teams of Anthony DeLuca/Oliver Gordon (first) and Luka Eaton/Brandon Benkler (fourth) posted identical 6-0, 6-0 wins. UM’s best individual showing came at first singles, where Jon Doan extended Josh Starczewski to three sets.
Boys golf
Hill School 230, Westtown School 262 >> Blustery conditions led to unusually inflated scores Thursday, but the Blues still managed a decisive non-league victory over Westtown at Brookside Country Club.
Thomas Beaudoin continued his fine play and earned low-man-of-the-day honors with a nine-hole round of 42. Billy Gussler (45) and Lucas Steinmetz (45) both had atypical scores, but still managed to keep their opponents at bay. Newcomers Marcus Smith (48) and Khoa Cao (51) acquitted themselves well in their first varsity outing,
