Upper Dublin routs undermanned Shipley School

RADNOR >> With four starters on the shelf due to various club sports commitments, the Gators of the Shipley School were not at full strength for Saturday afternoon’s contest against Upper Dublin at the 17th Annual Katie Samson Lacrosse Festival at Radnor High School.

It might not have mattered.

The Cardinals built an eight-goal lead by halftime and then coasted to a 17-4 victory in a non-league matchup that was lopsided from the outset.

As it turned out, Hannah Reape scored five times and Jackie Rama. Lindsey Schreiber, Ally Breslin and Carolne Wall had two goals each as Upper Dublin grabbed the game early and didn’t let go.

Elizabeth Talluto had two goals for the Gators, who were never really competitive.

“Usually we have a much stronger defensive set,” said Gators head coach Molly Fernandez, “but we had four starters out due to club commitments.

“Right now we’re focused on league play (Friends Schools League), where we’re 4-0. We have two games left and they should be pretty competitive.”

Which is not what the Gators were Saturday.

Schreiber made the score 6-0 with 9:10 left in the first half, and by that time the Cardinals had dominated play on both sides of the field.

“I had heard they had key people out,” said Cardinals head coach Dee Cross. “What I was worried about is how we would respond after that one-goal loss (11-10) to Abington on Friday.

“But we were able to start off strong, and play with consistency and mental toughness.”

After Talluto sliced into the lead, Upper Dublini closed the half with three unanswered goals, then got three of the second half’s first four goals to turn on the running clock.

By game’s end the Cardinals were celebrating and the Gators were looking around for a few warm bodies.

“You can tell (Shipley) is scrappy and tough when they have everybody playing,” Cross said “I give them a lot of credit, they battled until the end.”
