The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media Roundup (Dec. 28): McConnaha’s big double-double leads Souderton to victory in Tampa

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Souderton 69, Luella (Ga.) 60 >> Teya McConnaha put together a massive double-double, going for 24 points and 20 rebounds as Souderton built a 23-point lead after three quarters then held on to win their opener at the Tampa Bay Christmas Invitational in Florida Wednesday.

Erin Bohmueller had 14 points and nine assists while Casey Harter collected 13 points and seven rebounds for the Indians (7-1, 5-0 SOL Colonial), who won their sixth straight. Souderton led 39-18 at halftime then extended their advantage to 58-35 heading to the fourth.

Miliani Smith finished with a game-high 27 points for Luella, which outscored the Indians 25-11 in the fourth. Camryn Berry chipped in 11 points.

Lansdale Catholic 72, Pennridge 39 >> Lansdale Catholic had four players score in double figures led by Jaida Helm and Gabby Casey each posting 18 points as the Crusaders cruised to a win at the Boyertown Holiday Tournament.

Nadia Yemola added 18 points while Sanyiah Littlejohn had 11 points for LC (5-1). The loss drops Pennridge to 5-4 (2-3 SOL Colonial).

Plymouth Whitemarsh 50, Cicero-North Syracuse (N.Y.) 19 >> The duo of Erin Daley and Abby Sharpe powered Plymouth Whitemarsh to a victory at the Diamond State Classic in Wilmington, Delaware, Daley with a game-best 25 points while Sharpe scored 21 points. The Colonials (8-1, 4-1 SOL Liberty) have won their last six.

Methacton 38, Atlantic City (N.J.) 28 >> Mairi Smith filled up the stat sheet on both ends of the court, finishing with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks as Methacton earned its fourth straight win at the Boardwalk Classic in Wildwood, N.J.

Cassidy Kropp had 10 points and seven rebounds while Abby Arnold added 10 points and eight rebounds for the Warriors (6-3, 2-1 PAC, 1-1 PAC Liberty).

Quanirah Montague led Atlantic City with 12 points.

Villa Maria 55, Archbishop Carroll 36 >> Archbishop Carroll’s Taylor Wilson scored a game-high 19 points but Villa Maria pulled away in the fourth at the Cardinal O’Hara tournament to stay undefeated.

Elaina Guerzon hit four 3-pointers in posted 14 points for the Hurricanes (8-0, 2-0 AACA), who outscored the Patriots (1-6) 18-7 after beginning the fourth up eight.

William Tennent 39, Upper Merion 32 >> William Tennent (6-3, 3-2 SOL Colonial) earned its second straight win as the Panthers topped the hosts of the Upper Merion Holiday Tournament. The loss snapped a three-game win streak for the Vikings (3-4, 2-1 PAC, 2-0 PAC Frontier).

BOYS BASKETBALL

North Penn 68, Methacton 66 >> North Penn had four players in double figures – led by Ryan Zeltt’s 16 points – as the Knights survived Methacton’s second-half rally to snap a three-game skid at the Perk Valley Shootout.

Methacton trailed 38-25 at halftime before taking the third 23-15 to cut the margin to 53-48 entering the fourth. A Warriors’ missed 3-pointer at the buzzer allowed the Knights to hold on for the win.

Norman Gee had 15 points for North Penn (5-3, 3-2 SOL Colonial) while Ryan Deininger and Teddy McAllister added 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Sal Iemmello led Methacton (7-3, 2-1 PAC, 1-1 PAC Liberty) with 16 points. Matt Christian collected 15 points with Alex Hermann scoring 11 points.

St. Frances (Md.) 84, Archbishop Wood 75 >> Jahlil Bethea and Carson Howard led Archbishop Wood’s third-quarter rally to cut its 47-25 halftime deficit down to seven at 63-56 but St. Frances held on in the fourth to top the Vikings at the Jordan Holiday Classic in New York City.

Howard and Bethea combined for 23 of Wood’s 31 points in the third. Bethea led the Vikings (2-2) with 19 points while Howard finished with 18 points. Josh Reed added 15 points.

Carlton Carrington, a Pitt commit, scored 21 of his game-high 36 points in the first half for St. Francis. Tyler Jackson and Janathan Lamothe both had 16 points.

Pennridge 62, Governor Mifflin 54 >> Xavier Peters paced Pennridge with 21 points while Tommy Cramer totaled 16 points as the Rams (5-4, 2-3 SOL Colonial) picked up their second straight win at the Boyertown Holiday Tournament.

Perkiomen Valley 55, Wissahickon 42 >> Wissahcikon’s Dom Vacchiano knocked down five three-pointers in scoring a game-high 24 points but Perk Valley’s Julian Sadler finished with 23 points as the host Vikings held off the Trojans at the Perk Valley Shootout for their fourth win in a row.

Morgan McKinney had 11 points while Kyle Shawaluk posted 10 points – all in the first half – for PV (8-1, 2-1 PAC, 1-1 PAC Liberty), which led 32-24 at halftime. Sadler scored 11 of the Vikings’ 13 points in the fourth.

Central Catholic (Ohio) 48, Central Bucks East 46 >> Jacob Cummiskey and Tyler Dandrea both scored 12 points as Central Bucks East’s second-half comeback came up after a missed 3-pointer at the buzzer short as the Patriots were handed their first loss at the Cactus Jam in Phoenix, Arizona.

Kyle Berndt posted 11 points for East (9-1, 5-0 SOL Colonial), who trailed 34-24 at the halftime before pulling to 43-38 at the end of the third.

Michael Greenlee and Isaiah Brenneman each had 11 points for Toledo Central Catholic while Makhi Leach scored 10 points.

La Salle 49, Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 48 >> James Bartchak scored a career-best 17 points while Horace Simmons scored 13 as La Salle (6-2) edged Maryland side Archbishop Spalding at the Benedictine Capital City Classic in Richmond, Virginia.

Lower Merion 81, Germantown Academy 34 >> Germantown Academy (2-6) lost its second straight at the Pete and Jameer Nelson Play-By-Play Classic at Widener University.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Souderton 2nd, Hatboro-Horsham 4th at Cumberland Valley Holiday Invite >> First-place finishes by Amy Masciulli in the 500 free (5:19.23) and Jessica Burns in the 100 breast (1:04.37) help the Souderton take second place at the Cumberland Valley Holiday Invitational.

The Indians finished with 460 points, which was only bettered by host CV’s 481. Emmaus was third at 399 with Hatboro-Horsham fourth at 387.

The Hatters’ Annie Jia and Sarah Parker each won two events – Jia first in the 200 free (1:54.18) and 100 fly (55.66) while Parker had the top time in the 50 free (24.64) and 100 free (53.54). HH’s Kathy Jia won the 200 IM in 2:06.48 while Kathy Jia, Emmy Erickson, Parker and Annie Jia teamed up to win both the 200 free (1:37.54) and 400 free (3:33.21) relays.

Burns also was second in the 200 individual medley, Masciulli placed third in the 100 fly (59.33) while Souderton got second-place finishes in both the 200 medley relay (Morgan James, Burns, Masciulli, Anna Stauffer; 1:50.25) and 200 free relay (Carol Ann Descher, Burns, Stauffer, Masciulli; 1:40.43). Stauffer earned third in the 200 free (1:59.47) and 500 free (5:26.50).

BOYS SWIMMING

Souderton 2nd at Cumberland Valley Holiday Invite >> Souderton’s Robbie Ferlick took first place in the 100 butterfly in 52.35 and swam on two winning relays as the Indians finished second as a team at the Cumberland Valley Holiday Invitational.

Souderton totaled 477 points while first-place Emmaus had 503. Hatboro-Horsham was fifth with 227 points.

The Indians’ 200 medley relays of Lincoln Annise, William Stanczewski, Ferlick and Matvy Andryushin earned first in 1:38.90 while Ferlick, Andryushin, Gian Carlo Bocchino and Annise won the 200 free relay in 1:29.63.

Also for Big Red, Stanczewski placed second in the 200 free (1:46.57) and third in the 100 breast (59.94) with the 400 free relay of Ferlick, Nathan Kleppinger, Bocchino and Stanczewski took second in 3:18.23.

For Hatboro-Horsham, David Ji took second in both the 200 individual medley (1:59.64) and 100 breast (59.61), Jack Giuliana was second in the 100 fly (53.54) and third in the 100 free (49.48) while Spencer Alderson had a second-place finish in the 50 free in 22.71.
