Sheehan joins O’Hara’s 1,000-point club in win

Mary Sheehan became the 12th girls basketball player at Cardinal O’Hara to join the 1,000-point club when she reached that milestone Thursday.

Sheehan needed 14 points to reach the mark in the Lions’ Catholic League contest with Hallahan. The two-time All-Delco didn’t wait around.

Sheehan hit 1,000 on the nose in the first quarter of O’Hara’s 67-19 triumph. She finished with 18 points and shot a perfect 8-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Sheehan joins the following list of O’Hara players to score her 1,000th point: Kristen Clement, who is Delco’s all-time leading scorer with 2,256

points; Chrissie Donahue (1,446); Kate Dessart Mager (1,405); Stephanie Holzer (1,313); Theresa Shank (1,200); Heather Scanlon (1,123); Trish Juhline (1,106); Shanice Johnson (1,105); Stacie Keffer (1,058); Brandi Batch (1,022); and Carol Larkin (1,013).

Sheehan is bound for Saint Joseph’s in the fall.

The Lions made 11 3-point field goals Thursday, including three by Molly Paolino. Kerry Patterson and Paolino each chipped in nine points for O’Hara (6-2, 3-0). Meghan Ricker added eight points while Hannah Nihill, the 2015-16 Daily Times Player of the Year, dished six assists. All-Delco Kenzie Gardler contributed six points and seven rebounds.

In the Catholic Academies:

Gwynedd Mercy 41, Sacred Heart 25 >> Freshman guard Kayleigh Doyle did a good job guarding Gwynedd’s top scorer, Maura Conroy, who was limited to only three points. But perennial powers such as the Monarchs always have a backup plan.

Senior forward Erin Dougherty made the Lions pay with a game-high 22 points. Dougherty scored 18 of her points in the first half, after which Sacred Heart trailed, 27-11.

Emily Robinson and Caitlin Hughes each scored a team-high seven points for the Lions (7-3, 0-1).

In the Bicentennial League:

Christian Academy 51, Calvary Baptist 8 >> TCA held Calvary to zero points in both the second and fourth quarters. Lindsay Haseltine paced the Crusaders (8-2, 4-1) with 12 points and Hannah Sareyka contributed 10.

In nonleague action:

Chichester 39, Sayre 19 >> The Eagles relied upon the scoring of two players who accounted for 32 of their total points.

Lauren Carrafa led the way with 18 points and Cierra Riggs tossed in 14. Carli Lanza didn’t score anything, but excelled in other areas of the floor as she registered six assists and 12 rebounds. The Eagles (2-4) held visiting Sayre scoreless in the second quarter.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Oxford 47, Sun Valley 38 >> A maintenance issue forced the host Vanguards to play this one down the road at Neumann University. Alas, Sun Valley (2-7, 0-4) was unable to notch its first league win of the season.

Kate Lannon had 11 points in the losing cause.
