PIAA Basketball: Coleman-Newsome and thensome from Carroll conquers Athens

Dean Coleman-Newsome picked a fine time to have one of the best games of his career.

The junior standout tallied a triple double with 13 points, 10 assists and 11 rebounds as Archbishop Carroll romped past Athens, 83-38, in the Round of 16 of the PIAA Class 5A boys basketball tournament.

Carroll led, 19-5, after one quarter and never looked back. The Patriots scored 26 points in the third quarter to turn the screws.

Moses Hipps led the way with 31 points. Shawn Smith added 13 points.

Carroll (14-10), the fifth seed out of District 12, will take on District 7 runner-up Montour on Tuesday night in the quarterfinal round.

In the Class 4A tournament:

Dallas 75, Cardinal O’Hara 57 >> Pearse McGuinn scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but the Lions (14-11) saw their run ended by the District 2 champion.

Dallas (24-3) pulled away by scoring 30 points in the third quarter. Michael Cumbo led the way with 23 points. Austin Finarelli made his final seven shots to finish with 21 points.

Girls Basketball

South Williamsport smothered Sacred Heart on the way to a 42-22 win in the PIAA Class 2A tournament.

South Williamsport (23-4) makes the PIAA quarterfinals for the first time in program history. Lacey Kreibel led the way with 12 points, and Claudia Green added 11.
