Morrisville looking to start strong with some new faces

MORRISVILLE – The Morrisville girls are back on the court for senior point guard Denise Sacco’s final season in a Lady Bulldogs’ uniform. Last year spelled the ending to the careers of graduates Carlee McClease, De’shira Jones and Delilah Mena, who was a key role player on the 2011 team that made states.

Junior forward Gabby Fogg – who averaged 9 points-per-game and the same number of rebounds-per-game – has also returned as has junior guard Natrece Harper.

Freshman Enijah King – who scored 18 points in Morrisville’s recent scrimmage with Stuart Country Day School – makes up the other half of the front court.

Head coach Dave Howell is looking for some big contributions this season from King.

“She played in our summer league so she has a pretty good idea of how we play,” said Howell. “I expect her to really be able to help us out this season.

“She’s a good rebounder and very good around the basket. She should be able to get the shots down low and the putbacks.”

Also returning to the varsity roster is sophomore guard/forward Tiara McClease, who will take up the guard position vacated by Mena, who plans to play women’s basketball and softball at Mercer County Community College.

The Bulldogs tip off their season 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 4 at Bristol vs. Suburban One League (SOL) National Conference rival Harry S Truman. Bristol plays Pennington Prep in a 4:30 matchup with the winners and losers meeting up on Saturday to determine the champion and runner-up.

The Red Raiders are playing in place of Conwell-Egan which pulled out of the tournament at the last minute, forcing the Warriors to scramble for a fourth player in the four-team tourney.

Morrisville recently lost in scrimmages with Bodine Academy and Pennington’s Red Raiders, who Howell says, are loaded with talent.

“We learned a few things about ourselves that we are spending this week trying to fix,” the coach explained.

Hopefully in time to face the Lady Tigers, who return sophomores Darnella McMillan and Tykira Rogers along with juniors Daeja Moore and Jayda Campbell.

“I expect a good game from Truman so we are definitely not looking past them,” stated Howell.

Last year, the Bulldogs captured the tournament trophy for the girls with a 56-46 win over Truman. Morrisville opened the tourney the night before with a 59-34 victory over the host team Bristol. The Conwell-Egan girls lost their opener to Truman 60-45 but rebounded the next day with a 37-23 triumph over the hosts.

After the tipoff, the Bulldogs come home to face Sacred Heart Monday, Dec. 7 before traveling to Bristol Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a Bicentennial Athletic League (BAL) matchup. Then it’s on to Faith Christian Academy Friday, Dec. 11 for another league event.
