Mercury Roundup (Jan. 23): Phoenixville girls cap impressive week with win over PJP

Phoenixville 27, Pope John Paul II 20 >> In a defense-dominated PAC Frontier Division contest, the Phantoms reversed the Golden Panthers’ first-quarter lead to record a PAC Frontier Division victory Friday.

Aubrie Breisblatt scored a game-high 11 points for Phoenixville, the lone player to reach double figures. PJP took a 6-2 lead after one quarter, but Phoenixville took a 10-8 lead into a second half that saw it hold the Lions to a pair in the fourth quarter.

The Phantoms, who broke a three-year winless drought against Pottsgrove on Wednesday, ended an even longer losing skid against PJP dating back to Dec. 20, 2016.

Spring-Ford 64, Methacton 41 >> Lucy Olsen torched the cords for a game-high 30 points, leading the Rams to a solid PAC Liberty Division victory over the Warriors Friday.

Emily Tiffan chipped in with another 18 points for Spring-Ford, which stretched a 38-23 halftime lead to 54-27 heading into the fourth quarter. For Methacton, Nicole Timko had 19 points — she extended her program record for 3-pointers to 161 by scoring twice from long distance — as Tori Bockrath added 10.

Pottsgrove 58, Upper Perkiomen 20 >> Sierra Potts headed a trio of double-figure scorers that led the Falcons to victory over the Indians in Friday’s PAC Frontier Division play.

Potts hit for 14 points ahead of teammates Rachel Ludwig (12) and Kyleah Holmes (10). Erin States was UP’s scoring leader with six points.

Boys basketball

Owen J. Roberts 74, Boyertown 70 >> With three players accounting for 60 points, the Wildcats overcame the Bears’ early lead — one fueled by the contributions of four double-figure scorers — to win this PAC Liberty Division matchup Friday.

Chase Johnson followed up a 24-point outing against Spring-Ford on Wednesday with a game-high 27 points — 12 of them coming from 3-point range — to key OJR’s rally from a 37-30 halftime deficit. Jake and Brody Bolyn added 17 and 16 points, respectively, as Roberts had a 44-33 edge in the second half.

Boyertown boasted a quartet of high-scoring players: Tre Diguglielmo with 19, David Leh with 16, Christian Renninger with 14 and Aarick Salata with 11.

Pope John Paul II 59, Phoenixville 45 >> In his first action of the season, Justin Green headed a trio of double-figure scorers that propelled the Golden Panthers to victory over the Phantoms in Friday’s PAC Frontier Division contest.

Green, who missed PJP’s first two contests with an ankle injury, netted 18 while teammates Jaden Workman and Luke McCarthy had 12 and 11, respectively. Mike Memmo got game scoring honors for Phoenixville with 21, while Zavier Mayo added 14.
