Collins heats up, so does Chester in win over Academy Park

Marquis Collins continued his hot streak Thursday night to help keep Chester undefeated in the Del Val League with a 66-59 win over Academy Park. Collins scored 12 of his 21 points in the third period to go with game totals of five assists, eight rebounds and two blocks.

The Knights made just one field goal in the first quarter. Jawan Collins, though, finished with 17 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and four steals against the Clippers (8-5, 4-0).

Elsewhere in the Del Val:

Penn Wood 68, Interboro 47 >> The Patriots kept the Bucs (0-13, 0-4) winless behind Jay Fitzgerald’s 18 points. Interboro’s Josh Encarnacion scored a game-high 23 points.

Chichester 67, Glen Mills 62 >> Derrick Welles kept his cool in the fourth quarter to lead the Eagles to the league win. He connected on all six of his free throws in the frame to complete his 22 points. Welles was supported by Eric Montanez, who in addition to 16 points, produced seven steals. The Bulls’ Myron Sanders scored a team-high 18 points.

In the Central League:

Ridley 55, Garnet Valley 38 >> The Raiders pulled away with a 22-3 fourth quarter run. Brett Foster hit three three-pointers as part of his 20-point effort. The Jaguars’ Brandon Starr led the hosts with 14 points.

Strath Haven 56, Marple Newtown 51 >> After trailing at the break, John Harrar’s presence in the post keyed the Panthers’ comeback. Harrar, at 6-8, finished with 15 points. Jahmeir Springfield scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half. The Tigers (1-12, 0-8) were led by Mike May, who scored a career-high 13.

Penncrest 44, Radnor 39 >> Penncrest led the whole way thanks to strong games from AJ Taylor, who scored a game-high 17 points, and Tyler Norwood, who added 10. Radnor falls to 8-7.

Harriton 49, Springfield 40 >> The Cougars couldn’t handle the Rams’ Will Esposito, who poured in a game-high 27 points. Springfield’s Mason Liberty grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 14 points while Alex DeAngelis dished out five assists.

Lower Merion 73, Upper Darby 47 >> Anthony McFall’s 13 points provided a consolation prize for the Royals in a blowout loss. He was the lone Upper Darby player in double figures.

In the Ches-Mont:

Sun Valley 63, Kennett 56 >> The Vanguards jumped out to a quick first-quarter lead and didn’t look back. Kyle Ryan hit four three’s as part of his game-high 24 points. Ryan Hall chipped in 11 for Sun Valley, which outscored the Blue Demons 14-8 after the half.

In nonleague action:

Morrisville 44, The Christian Academy 41 >> The Crusaders fell behind early and couldn’t make up the deficit Thursday night despite a strong performance from Jalen Sherrill (16 points, seven rebounds, four steals). He was helped out on the glass by Brit Haseltine, who collected eight boards.
