A year ago, Episcopal Academy escaped with a one-point win over Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. Friday night, the Blue Devils got a little payback.
Bobby Markey and A.J. Graham teamed up for the go-ahead score that gave SCHA a 23-16 come-from-behind victory over the Churchmen Friday night in the season opener for both team.
After throwing two long passes to Markey to get the Blue Devils in scoring position, Graham hauled in a 20-yard TD pass from Markey to erase a 16-15 deficit. Carnell Kemp then caught a two-point conversion pass to account for the final margin of victory.
It was a back-and-forth battle. The Churchman struck first on a Christian Bush field goal. The Blue Devils scored the next 15 points thanks to the speed of Ivan Thorp. First, Thorp took a pass from Graham 52 yards for a TD and then return an interception 85 yards for another score for a 15-3 SCHA lead.
Billy Adams cut that deficit to 15-10 with a touchdown reception. Junior quarterback Jake Fant scored on a sneak to put EA back on top, 16-15.
Markey and Graham, though, spearheaded a drive that gave the Blue Devils the lead for good.
