Fast start propels Garnet Valley in football opener

Garnet Valley got off to a fast start in the COVID-19 shortened 2020 season.

The Jaguars scored on their first five possessions and rolled to a 42-6 victory over Lower Merion in Central League Class 6A action at Moe DeFrank Stadium Friday night.

Sean Gallager, Ndozi Okolo and Shane Reynolds scored as the Jaguars jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter. Reynolds and Gallagher sandwiched long touchdown runs around Ndozi Okolo’s touchdown, which came on a slant pass from Kevin McGarrey.

Gallagher added a touchdown reception from McGarrey in the second quarter and Shane Mulholland found paydirt on a short run for the Jags, who only needed 11 plays from scrimmage to open up a 35-0 lead. Outside linebacker Will Wrzesniewski returned an interception to give Garnet Valley a 42-0 advantage at the break.

Lower Merion scored late in the fourth quarter to spoil the shutout bid. Garnet Valley, which has won the last two Central League titles, hosts Conestoga next Friday night. The Pioneers dropped a 21-14 decision to Ridley.
