Lazer, Welde team up to lead Bonner & Prendergast

Kyle Lazer completed 11 of 15 passes for 128 yards and four TDs as Bonner & Prendergast thumped Lansdale Catholic, 40-14.

At 6-3 and 190-pounds, Bonner-Prendergast senior tight end James Welde presents quite a problem for opposing defensive backs.

Friars’ quarterback Nick Lazer exploited that advantage Friday night.

Lazer and Welde hooked up nine times, three for touchdowns, as the Friars erased a two-point deficit in the first half and rolled to a 40-14 Catholic League Blue Division victory over Lansdale Catholic.

Lazer completed 11 of 15 passes for 128 yards and four TDs, and Welde was on the receiving end of most of those completions. He caught nine passes for 112 yards and touchdowns of seven, 14 and 17 yards as the Friars (4-1, 2-1) won for the second straight week.

Welde, who also plays basketball, came into the game with five receptions for 94 yards.

Early on, though, LC (3-3, 1-2) was in control. The Crusaders took a 14-12 lead when Andrew Frederickson pulled in a nine-yard TD pass from Jeron Phillips with 7:44 to play in the first half.

The Friars, though, dug deep and put together a 15-play drive, capped by a 10-yard scoring pass from Lazer to Gaven Pagan-Hunt with 18 ticks left in the second quarter to take an 18-12 lead into the locker room.

It was all MBAP after that.

Oscar Uduma scored on a one-yard run, and Welde grabbed a 14-yard scoring pass from Lazer to make it 33-12 heading into the final quarter. Welde hauled in his final TD reception with 4:22 to play in the game to close out the scoring.

Mason Peterson also had a big game for the Friars. He carried the ball 14 times for 139 yards and a touchdown as MBAP pounded out 225 yards on the ground. The Friars are back at home next week against Conwell-Egan and close out the season with consecutive road games against Archbishop Carroll, Cardinal O’Hara and West Catholic.
