Souderton’s Ang Borisow is The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media 2022 Field Hockey Player of the Year
Ang Borisow loves competition. It doesn’t matter whether she’s competing against opponents, teammates, family or herself.
The Souderton senior’s competitive nature has served her well on the field hockey pitch. A four-year starter, she’s helped her team win three Suburban One League championships while earning first team all-league three times and first team all-state twice.
“I’ve always grown up competitive,” she said. “I used to play a lot of family games and the family games always made me want to win and beat other family members. I’ve always grown up in a competitive family which I think led to me showing it on the field.”
Borisow, who’s mother and sister played field hockey at the college level, scored 15 goals and dished out nine assists this fall. She led Souderton to an SOL Colonial Division title and appearances in the District 1-3A quarterfinals and PIAA-3A state playoffs. She is The Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Media 2022 Player of the Year.
“Obviously she’s very talented, incredibly fit,” Souderton coach Sue Casciato said, “but I’ve never coached anybody or seen anybody play who really wants the ball all the time. She gets twice as many touches as everybody else on the field. Having her on the field we’re always like a man up.”
The Indians went 16-2 this regular season, but Borisow’s favorite moment was actually one of the losses. Trailing Methacton 3-0 at halftime, Casciato pulled Borisow aside and told her she could lead the team back. Souderton rallied to make it a 3-3 game, but lost in overtime.
“I felt like I was really able to step up as a leader there,” Borisow said, “and lead my team to get the energy back and get us communicating and playing together as a team. I was proud of myself at that moment because I was able to step up and take that leadership role that I’ve always worked towards my whole high school experience.”
Borisow started her career at sweeper as a freshman before moving to center-back for two years. This season she played center-mid.
“She had a few things to learn freshman year,” Casciato said, “but she’s always gotten a lot of touches. As she got more confidence, she just continued to grow. She’s a really good player. She’s still taking private lessons. She’s always trying to grow her game.”
Borisow spent a lot of time working with Casciato. Not only four years at Souderton Area High School, but in club with the Souderton Strikers and at camps when she was younger.
“I’ve been very lucky that she’s just been a fixture on my teams,” Casciato said. “She signs up for every tournament and every opportunity to play that she can… There’s nobody I spent more time on the field hockey field with than Ang – any previous player, coach or even teammates back in the day when I played. She’s just always been there.”
Borisow will continue her academic and field hockey careers at Rider University next year. She committed last October.
“I went to the campus and I loved the campus,” Borisow, who also considered Lehigh, Bucknell and American, said. “I loved the coaches and the team was very welcoming. I was able to have lunch with them and they were so funny and they included me in everything. I immediately knew I wanted to go there.”
She will finish her high school athletic career playing lacrosse in the spring.
