Conestoga’s Kate Galica is Main Line Girls Athlete of the Week

The junior forward, a All-Central League field hockey first team pick (unanimous selection by the league coaches), scored 32 goals and dished out 14 assists as the Most Valuable Player for the 22-2 Pioneers this fall. She scored both goals in Conestoga’s 2-1 win against Garnet Valley in the District 1 championship final. A three-sport standout (field hockey, basketball, lacrosse), she has committed to the University of Virginia for lacrosse.

Q: What is your favorite memory of the District 1 championship final?

A: My favorite memory was scoring that second goal because I had a few other opportunities that game but couldn’t finish. We continued to press their back line so I just knew that one of us would break through.  Then, to finally make a good play on the ball and watching it hit the back of the cage was awesome.  But what I remember most looking back on it now is the post goal celebration with my teammates!

Q: What do you think is the strongest aspect of your game? What part of your game are you working on the most currently?

A: I’ve worked very hard on my transition game where I’m always looking to make a long run down the sideline and then bring the ball into the circle.  Sometimes this results in penalty corners which is great but also it gets the ball out of our defensive end and allows our back line to reset.  I’m working on trying to finish more of those runs with goals but it’s hard to do when running at full speed.

Q: What originally sparked your interest in field hockey? You play midfield in lacrosse – what attracted you to the forward position in field hockey?

A: I had watched my brother and played soccer for just a little time but I guess having a stick in my hand felt more natural than a ball at my feet.  I played midfield in field hockey for a couple of years, but forward showed my personal strengths best!

Q: What is your favorite course at Conestoga?

A: It’s sort of like in sports where I always like a challenge and since Conestoga is such a great school I’m constantly being challenged.  I don’t have a favorite course, but I’m doing well in my foreign language and literature classes so I think I like them the best.
