Mercury Roundup (Oct. 28): Upper Perk tops Phoenixville to lock up district semifinal, state playoff spots

FIELD HOCKEY

Upper Perkiomen 8, Phoenixville 1

Highlights: Jess Traynor’s hat trick paved the way as the second-seeded Indians (20-1-1) took down the seventh-seeded Phantoms in Thursday’s District 1 Class 2A quarterfinal. The win clinched UP a spot in the PIAA tournament.

Traynor scored three goals and added an assist for UP. Jade Traynor, Luci Carpenter, Ashlyn Gatto, Kylene Gooch (assist) and Takoda Wells (assist) also scored, while Julia Traynor added an assist. Lynnsi Joyce made five saves in goal. Phoenixville goalie Sophia Greenwalt made 40 saves.

Upper Perk hosts third-seeded Gwynedd Mercy at 6 p.m. on Tuesday.

Villa Maria 10, Pope John Paul II 0

Highlights: The ninth-seeded Golden Panthers’ historic season came to a conclusion Thursday at the hands of top-seeded Villa in the District 1 Class 2A tournament.

Gi Manza made 12 defensive saves for PJP (11-9), which set a program record in wins and earned the first district playoff win in program history.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Downingtown West 3, Spring-Ford 0

Highlights: After dropping a tight first set, the 20th-seeded Rams fell to the fourth-seeded Whippets in straight sets (31-29, 25-15, 25-19).

Senior Ally Plitnick (25 assists), senior Camryn Elsner (13 digs), junior Sara Fritzinger (15 kills) and junior Katie Gentilotti (12 digs) were standouts for Spring-Ford, which finished its season at 13-7.

Garnet Valley 3, Upper Merion 0

Highlights: The 21st-seeded Vikings (13-7) fell in straight sets to the fifth-seeded Jaguars 25-12, 25-18 and 25-23.

. Sophia Schweikert tallied 18 kills and three aces. Vanessa Hutchinson and Julia Giammarco contributed 13 digs, and Caitlyn Daywalt had 16 assists.

BOYS SOCCER

Perkiomen School 3, Cristo Rey 2

Highlights: Brock Reber, Guillermo Heras Gomez and Palmer Townsend scored as the Panthers (12-2) earned the Penn-Jersey League championship with Thursday’s win.

GIRLS SOCCER

New Foundations 2,  Perkiomen School 1

Highlights: Cheyenne McCloud’s penalty kick in the final two minutes was the lone score for the Panthers in Thursday’s loss.
