The Merion Mercy Academy field hockey team (20-3-1) advanced to the PIAA District 1 2A championship final with a 4-2 win against Villa Maria Academy Tuesday.
The Golden Bears built a 4-0 halftime lead on two goals by Grace Lopresti, and single goals from Emily Hauck and Alex Lavelle. Hauck, Mallory McHale and Tori Natale each dished out an assist.
Merion Mercy head coach Greta Ehret said, “Our girls came out on fire in the first half, scoring on three beautifully-executed corners and controlling the tempo.
“In the second half Villa did a nice job pressuring our defenders coming out and it put us on our heels a bit. I commend them for never giving up and know that they have a lot of young talent. However, our defense remained strong coming up with many block tackles in the circle and remaining composed under pressure.
“Overall, I am proud of this team and the mental toughness they showed in today’s contest. We continue to #dreamcrazy and look forward to the opportunity of playing on the district championship on Saturday.”
The Golden Bears, the No. 5 seed in the tournament, will face third seed Upper Perkiomen in the championship game Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Methacton High School.
