Mount Saint Joseph makes quick work of Springfield-Delco in District 1-2A 1st round

SPRINGFIELD >> Mount Saint Joseph Academy defeated Springfield Delco 7-0 in the first round of the District 1-2A playoffs on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Mount Saint Joseph Academy.

The seventh-seeded Magic took the lead less than 10 minutes into the game. Rory Williamson dribbled through a couple defenders and reversed a shot into the top right corner.

Ashley Timby scored three straight goals to give the Mount a 4-0 lead at halftime. Two of her scores came on penalty corners.

“We’ve been working really hard at practice on executing our corners,” Timby said after the Magic converted 4-of-14. “I feel like that really showed in today’s game.”

Maggie Wooley, Williamson and Julianna Wagner added goals in the second half to make it a 7-0 opening-round win.

“I felt like we passed really well today,” Timby said. “We used each other and we had each other’s backs on everything.”

“(Mount is) a really skilled team,” Springfield coach Hope Taylor-Scott said. “I think being at home was certainly an advantage, too. (Williamson and Megan Maransky) — we were prepared to focus our play around them because they’re so strong. I don’t know if that worked out for us today. They connect really well. Their ball movement is quick, especially through the midfield. They know where to send the play. That’s from coaching and experience and a lot of skilled players.”

The Mount will face the winner of No. 2 Bishop Shanahan and No. 15 Pope John Paul II in the second round Thursday.

The 10th-seeded Cougars season is complete after Tuesday’s defeat.

“We had a great season,” Taylor-Scott said. “Our program has grown a lot in the last few years. We ended up 10th in the standings for 2A, which is the best we’ve ever done at least in over 10 years. We’re graduating eight seniors, which is a lot of girls. We play with a lot of heart, so all-in-all it was a great season.”
