Lower Moreland rallies past Plumstead in first round of districts

After the two teams split the regular season meetings with a pair of 1-0 differences Lower Moreland and Plumstead Christian squared off in the first round of the District 1-AA playoffs. The game would once again be separated by one goal but this meeting would feature a lot more scoring with the Lions emerging victorious 5-4.

“I felt like they were coming in with the momentum, they beat us a week ago 1-0,’ Lower Moreland coach Danielle Klein said.

Just over three minutes into the game the first goal was notched by Plumstead as Sophie Kent gave the Panthers the 1-0 lead. Lower Moreland responded to the Plumstead goal by not only scoring two minutes later but scoring the next four goals including a goal and an assist from forward Lindsay Boerner.

“It was very early on and our girls are very good and have been very good all season at bouncing back so I wasn’t too worried at that point I knew we would comeback.’

Throughout the game Lower Moreland did a good job at keeping the pressure in the Plumstead defensive zone. Lion’s midfielder Corey Mayer was a huge catalyst in their offensive efforts as she made great runs into the zone and shooting the ball from all over.

“We try to keep possession the entire game and keep shooting,’ Klein said. “Corey did a wonderful job. She’s our offensive center mid and likes to control the field and control the game. Her stick work is beautiful to watch on the turf.’

The Lower Moreland offensive possession allowed it to fire off 18 shots at the Plumstead cage. Plumstead goalie Hannah LaBouliere made 13 saves allowing the Plumstead offensive to find a way to get it back in the game.

“I’m so excited (for the next three years) and I loved playing with the seniors this year, they were amazing,’ the freshman goalie said.

The Lions will not have long to enjoy its victory as the Lions have No. 2 Gwynedd Mercy Academy waiting for them on Thursday afternoon.

“We take it one game at a time and prepare and try our best,’ Klein said. “We’re looking forward to putting our best effort out against Gwynedd and taking it to them.’
