Scanlon a super saver in win for Springfield

Ally Scanlon kept West Chester Rustin off the scoreboard Friday with 14 saves and host Springfield’s attack finally broke through in overtime, when Monica McCarthy finished off a pass from Emily Brennecke, giving the Cougars a hard-fought 1-0 nonleague win.

Hannah Sweeny played a key role in midfield in getting the ball forward to playmaker Brennecke, and Shannon Hagarty supplied defensive support for Scanlon.

In other nonleague matches:

Avon Grove 3, Garnet Valley 2: Hailey Valerio came up huge between the pipes, producing a 17-save highlight reel that included a penalty stroke stop in the second half to keep the Jaguars (2-5) within striking distance. Alex Elisio had a hand in both Garnet Valley scores, ramming home a pass from Brittany Talley and setting up Anna Dunn’s goal.

Bishop Shanahan 4, Cardinal O’Hara 3: Jess Randazzo gave the Lions (4-1) the lead 2 minutes into the game, Makayla Gallen had a goal and an assist and Kelly Methven tied it with 9 minutes to go in regulation, but Bishop Shanahan pulled it out in overtime thanks mainly to 24 saves by Aileen Taylor.

Bonner-Prendergast 5, Penncrest 1: Alyssa Monaghan’s two goals led a balanced attack and Riley Dolan controlled play from midfield, picking up a goal and two assists, and Maggie Baldini came up with 13 saves for the Pandas. Alissa Pastino converted a feed from Leah Hill for the Lions’ lone score.

Episcopal Academy 6, Harriton 0: Corrine Zanolli and Margaux Paolino scored two goals apiece and goalie Rachael Farmer faced just one shot in posting the shutout.

Interboro 7, Friends Select 2: The Bucs snapped a halftime tie with a six-goal explosion behind the exploits of Julie Dunleavy (two goals, one assist), Annette Helmandollar (two goals, one assist), Jasmine Golden (two goals) and Lexy Tansey (three assists).

Merion Mercy 2, Notre Dame 1: The Irish enjoyed a halftime lead courtesy of Amanda Odgers’ goal, but Notre Dame (2-2) faltered in the second half.

In the Bicentennial League:

New Hope-Solebury 1, Delco Christian 0: The visitors’ goal late in the first half was the lone blemish on an otherwise sterling performance by Jamie Madison, who made a dozen saves for the Knights (1-5).
