Delco History Hub
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association was created in 1913 to oversee athletics in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Starting in 1920, the organization began bestowing state championships, first in boys basketball before expanding to other sports.
A century later, the PIAA governs 15 sports and hands out 25 trophies a year, in charge of sporting competitions between public, private and charter schools throughout the state.
Delaware County athletes were there from the very beginning. The first Delco state champion came on the track, Chester High’s Henry Harvey winning the 880-yard run at the 1926 Class A meet. In nearly 100 years since then, hundreds of individuals from Delco have been crowned champions by the PIAA, while dozens of teams have lifted trophies, including a record-high eight in 2024.
The Delco history hub is an attempt to put that history in once place. Below are links to various historical lists compiled by our staff over the last few years, including team champions and individual champs in a variety of sports. Also included are county records in track & field and swimming. Keep an eye out for some new additions in the coming months, including a revamped list of football records.
Data compiled from a variety of sources including PIAA.org, the archives of Rod Frisco, paswimming.com, pa-wrestling.com and the Daily Times archives. For questions and corrections, please contact sports@delcotimes.com.
