Strath Haven defense puts the squeeze on Garnet Valley

Brandon Star and Austin Laughlin have been putting up some big numbers for Garnet Valley. Strath Haven put a stop to that Thurday night.

The Panthers held Star, the leading scorer in the county, to five points in a 59-52 Central League boys basketball victory over the Jaguars.

Laughlin led all scorers with 26, but that was not enough to offset the offensive production of Strath Haven’s John Harrar and Christopher Rosini. Harrar scored 24 points and Rosini hit three of his six 3-point field goals in the third quarter to put the Panthers up for good. Rosini finished with 18 points.

Elsewhere in the Central League:

Springfield 46, Haverford 35 >> The Cougars had six players score between five and eight points. Kyle Sullivan and Great Orjih led the way with eight points apiece.

Tre Blair of Haverford led all scorers with 14 points.

Ridley 61, Marple Newtown 40 >> Damir Fleming (20 point), Liam Thompson (15) and Jimmy Bramwell (14) carried the offensive load for the Green Raiders (3-2, 2-1). Bramwell also had eight rebounds.

Mike May tallied 11 points for the Tigers.

Lower Merion 59, Radnor 41 >> The Aces held the Raiders to 12 points in the second half. Steve Payne led three Lower Merion players in double figures with 17 points. Mason Ressler and Sami Ghazzi had 11 points each for Radnor.  

Penncrest 55, Upper Darby 48 >> Justin Heidig had a career-high 11 points off the bench to help the Lions hold off the Royals. Tyler Norwood led Penncrest (5-2, 5-0) with 21 points. Justin Ross chipped in with 17, while Mike Mallon pulled down 11 points.

Noah Walker scored 13 of his 15 points in the third quarter to get Upper Darby back in the game.  

In the Bicentennial League:

New Hope-Solebury 43, Delco Christian 42 >> Kevin Dougherty’s layup with eight seconds left won it for the Lions. Jordan Parks scored 10 of his 21 points in the third quarter to help the Knights (3-3, 1-3) get back into the game.

In the Ches-Mont League:

Great Valley 36, Sun Valley 32 >> Sean Steppke led all scorers with 19 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Vanguards dropped a tough one at home.

In nonleague action:

Haverford School 65, Friends’ Central 58 >> Christian Ray’s layup with 1:15 left put the Fords (7-1) up to stay. Kharon Randolph hit four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory. Ray finished with 22 points and 18 rebounds while Randolph had 16 points.

Bonner & Prendergast 70, Interboro 28 >> The Friars jumped out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter and never looked back. Ajiri Johnson of B&P was the only player in double figures. He finished with 16 points.
