Sharkey’s big night paces Carroll in opener

Josh Sharkey put forth a tremendous all-around effort to lead Archbishop Carroll to a season-opening win at the Play-by-Play Classic at Widener University late Saturday night.

Sharkey was named game MVP after scoring 17 points with nine rebounds, seven assists and four steals in a 66-56 decision over Academy of the New Church.

The Patriots (1-0) trailed by three points at halftime, but used a 20-11 run in the third quarter to pull ahead to stay. Ryan Daley netted 16 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Colin Daley dropped in 13 points. John Rigsby notched four charges on defense to go with his 10 points.

Haverford School 50, Father Judge 44 >> Jack Marshal posted a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Kharon Randolph (14 points) and Joe Dignazio (12) each scored in double digits for the Fords (3-1). Micah Sims dished seven assists.

Allderdice 81, Academy Park 70 >> With their full complement of players back in the lineup, after the football team’s run to the PIAA Class AAA playoffs ended Friday night, the Knights nearly recovered from 22-9, first-quarter deficit against Allderdice, which advanced to the PIAA Class AAAA semifinals last season.

Jawan Collins scored 13 of his game-high 23 points from the free-throw line. Nick Simmons poured in 18 points and DeAndray Covert finished with 12 for the Knights (0-2).
