Schuylkill Valley breaks three game losing streak

After winning two of their first three games of the season, the Schuylkill Valley High School boys basketball team has been struggling of late. Last week, the the Panthers broke a four game losing streak when they topped New Covenant, but they lost the next two games to go 0-2 in the Berks League, and 3-7 overall this winter.

The week started with a road game in Northern Lebanon against New Covenant. A big third quarter helped Schuylkill Valley to a 58-35 victory.

The Panthers held a 16-11 lead after one quarter, then expanded the advantage to 12 by halftime, 31-19. But Schuylkill Valley put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring New Covenant, 17-4.

Evan Hargrave had a big game offensively for the Panthers, scoring 22 points. Kyle Worrell netted 11 and Kevin Rosado netted eight points and Tyler Worrell had four.

On Dec. 27, Schuylkill Valley played another non-league road game, this time against Hilda Goodling Impact Academy. The Academy scored 33 points in the first quarter and never looked back, defeating the Panthers, 89-50.

Hilda Goodling Impact Academy took control of the game early, grabbing a 33-10 lead after one quarter. They expanded the advantage to 39 points by halftime, 57-18.

Hargrave was the leading point scorer for Schuylkill Valley, canning 16 points in the game. Jacob Stahl contributed with 12 points, while Tyler Worrell and Naoh Lassandro each scored scored five. Aaron Schlegel and Kyle Worrell had four points apiece.

On Dec. 30, the Panthers stayed on the road to take on Boyertown in a non-league affair. Once again the Panthers got off to a por start, helping Boyertown defeat the locals, 57-28.

The Bears jumped out to a 20-5 lead after one quarter, but the Panthers got their legs in the second period, cutting the lead to 13 by halftime, 26-13. But Boyertown pulled away in the second half, outscoring Schuylkill Valley in the third quarter, 13-4, and the fourth, 18-11.

Hargrave was the top scorer once again for the Panthers, scoring 20 points in the game. Tyler Worrell and Schlegel each scored three points, and Angel Martinez scored the other two points.
