Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery Area Boys Basketball Preview

This year’s District 1-6A tournament could look very similar to last year’s. Abington, Cheltenham and Plymouth Whitemarsh — the three 2017 semifinalists along with Coatesville — all return key players and promise to be the top teams in the Reporter/Times Herald/Montgomery area.

Abington brings back senior guard Robbie Heath and junior forward Eric Dixon. Heath started for the Ghosts district championship teams in 2015 and 2017. Dixon is a tough matchup for any player in the district and is on Villanova’s recruiting radar.

Cheltenham returns plenty from last year’s team and is led by senior guard Jack Clark. Clark, a La Salle commit, is in range once he crosses the timeline.

Plymouth Whitemarsh will look to get to the district final four for the fourth straight season, winning the title in 2016. Senior guards Ahmin Williams and Ahmad Williams are two of the best defenders in the area, senior guard Ish Horn led the offense down the stretch last year and 7-foot junior center Naheem McLeod continues to improve.

Others to watch in the area include Archbishop Wood, Archbishop Carroll, La Salle and Wissahickon. Wood — the defender Catholic League, District 12 and state champions — will lean on Tyree Pickron, Andrew Funk and Seth Pinkney to defend their titles. The other three schools return plenty of talent, such as Carroll’s AJ Hoggard, La Salle’s Zach Crisler and Wissahickon’s Zach Reiner.

North Penn and Upper Merion both appear to be in rebuilding mode. The Knights lost nine seniors from last year’s Suburban One League Continental Conference championship team and the Vikings graduated all of their varsity minutes last season after reaching the District 1 Class-5A finals.

Norristown, Upper Dublin and Upper Moreland will have new faces on the sidelines. Dana “Binky” Johnson takes over as coach for the Eagles, Chris Monahan the Cardinals and Sean Feeley the Golden Bears.

Key returnees: Justin Anderson, Keyon Butler, Devon Ferrero, Luke House, Shawn Johnson, AJ Hoggard
Outlook: “Our team is talented & experienced at the guard position & they will certainly lead us. I think our biggest key to success will be how we defend and rebound. We do not possess size on the frontline but we have good overall team size and versatility both defensively and offensively. Our league will certainly be very difficult however I believe we can be a success yet again if we are blessed with good health and our leadership develops.”

Archbishop Wood
Coach: John Mosco (5th year)

This is by far the best shooting team we’ve had here at Cheltenham since I’ve been here. We expect to be competing for our league title and advancing to the final four in districts.”

We will work on making our guys mentally and physically tough, as well as helping them to understand how important our culture and our chemistry are to our team. If we can learn from our non-league schedule, and carry those lessons with us, we can win our share of games and see where that takes us.”

Players to Watch: Noah Kitaw, David Duda, Jeff Woodward
Outlook: “The 2017-2018 Methacton Warriors are a young and hungry group of players! Despite losing 8 seniors to graduation, this team has worked hard throughout the offseason to prepare for the upcoming season. The trio of David Duda, Jeff Woodward, and Noah Kitaw gained valuable experience last season and look to provide strong leadership this season.
