SENIOR WEEKS: Downingtown West’s Morse knows Whippets’ revenge on rival East will have to wait

For the past six years, the Downingtown West baseball team has been one of the prominent squads in District 1.

The Whippets reeled off five straight Ches-Mont League National Division titles, and have been a regular in the District 1 playoff picture.

Last season, the Whippets were upended by a talented squad from across down, as archrival Downingtown East won the Ches-Mont National Division crown.

This did not sit well with the Whippets, and their hopes for redemption in 2020 rested heavily on versatile senior pitcher and outfielder Drew Morse.

Morse had a big junior season at the plate, hitting over .360 and driving in 17 runs.

Morse, like other area baseball players was devastated by the cancellation of the spring sports season due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“I am really frustrated by not being able to play baseball,” Morse said. “We worked extremely hard in the offseason because we want to get that Ches-Mont title back again. We have a solid core of guys that have been together for six years now back to middle school days. We have a great bond and we were really looking forward to our senior season. We worked harder than we ever had this offseason to get that title back.”

Morse is headed to Lehigh University next fall to further his academic and athletic career and he talked about his college choice.

“I mean, Lehigh is a great academic school so that was very important to me,” Morse said. “And I will get the chance to play the outfield and pitch so that was important to me also. I really wanted to go to a college that allowed me to play both spots.”
